For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.
For none of us liveth to himself, and none dieth to himself.
None of us lives for himself [for his own benefit, but for the Lord], and none of us dies for himself [but for the Lord].
None of us lives to himself [but to the Lord], and none of us dies to himself [but to the Lord, for]

We don’t live for ourselves and we don’t die for ourselves.
For none of us lives only in relation to himself, and none of us dies only in relation to himself;
Whether we live or die, it must be for God, rather than for ourselves.

We don’t live or die just for ourselves.
None of us lives only to please ourselves. And we do not die to please ourselves.
In fact, not one of us lives for himself, and not one dies for himself.

It’s clear that we don’t live to honor ourselves, and we don’t die to honor ourselves.
We do not live for ourselves only, and we do not die for ourselves only.
For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself.
For we do not live or die for ourselves.
For none of us lives for himself, and no one dies for himself.
Again, one man thinks some days of more importance than others. Another man considers them all alike. Let every one be definite in his own convictions. If a man specially observes one particular day, he does so “to God”. The man who eats, eats “to God”, for he thanks God for the food. The man who fasts also does it “to God”, for he thanks God for the benefits of fasting. The truth is that we neither live nor die as self-contained units. At every turn life links us to God, and when we die we come face to face with him. In life or death we are in the hands of God. Christ lived and died that he might be the Lord in both life and death.
For none of us live for ourselves, and no one dies for himself.

For not one of us lives for himself, and not one dies for himself;
For none of us lives for himself and none dies for himself.
We are not our own bosses to live or die as we ourselves might choose.
What’s important in all this is that if you keep a holy day, keep it for God’s sake; if you eat meat, eat it to the glory of God and thank God for prime rib; if you’re a vegetarian, eat vegetables to the glory of God and thank God for broccoli. None of us are permitted to insist on our own way in these matters. It’s God we are answerable to—all the way from life to death and everything in between—not each other. That’s why Jesus lived and died and then lived again: so that he could be our Master across the entire range of life and death, and free us from the petty tyrannies of each other.
