Meanwhile, I’ve kept my heart pure for no good reason; I’ve washed my hands to stay innocent for nothing.
It’s all for nothing that I’ve kept my heart clean and washed my hands, staying free of guilt;
What good did it do me to keep my thoughts pure and refuse to do wrong?
Truly have I purified my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocency:
Thou by thy strength didst make the sea firm: thou didst crush the heads of the dragons in the waters.
Clearly, then, I gain nothing by keeping my thoughts pure! What good is it to keep myself from sin?
I decided that I had tried to do what is right, but it did not help me at all! I had refused to do anything wrong, for no good reason!
Have I really kept my heart pure for nothing? Have I kept my hands clean in vain?
All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence.

Certainly I have cleansed mine heart in vain, and washed mine hands in innocency.
I’ve received no reward for keeping my life pure and washing my hands of any blame.
Is it for nothing, then, that I have kept myself pure and have not committed sin?
Did I purify my heart and wash my hands in innocence for nothing?
So why have I kept my heart pure? Why have I kept my hands from doing wrong?
I kept my heart pure for nothing and kept my hands clean from guilt.

Have I been wasting my time? Why take the trouble to be pure?
What’s going on here? Is God out to lunch? Nobody’s tending the store. The wicked get by with everything; they have it made, piling up riches. I’ve been stupid to play by the rules; what has it gotten me? A long run of bad luck, that’s what— a slap in the face every time I walk out the door.
Surely I have kept my heart pure for nothing, and washed my hands in innocence.
I’ve received no reward for keeping my life pure and washing my hands of any blame.
Is it in vain that I have kept my heart pure, washed my hands in innocence?

I concluded, “Surely in vain I have kept my motives pure and maintained a pure lifestyle.
It seems as if I have kept my heart pure for no reason. It didn’t do me any good to wash my hands to show that I wasn’t guilty of doing anything wrong.
Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence.
Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence.
Surely I have cleansed my heart in vain, And washed my hands in innocence.
For no good reason I have kept my heart pure and have not sinned.
Did I keep my heart pure for nothing? Did I keep myself innocent for no reason?

And I said, Therefore without cause I justified mine heart; and washed mine hands among innocents. (And I said, And so I have keep my heart pure, and I have kept my hands clean, all for nothing/all in vain.)
