But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide and mine acquaintance.

No. It’s you, my equal, my close companion, my good friend!
For it was not an enemy who insulted me; if it had been, I could have borne it. It was not my adversary who treated me with scorn; if it had been, I could have hidden myself.
But it was my closest friend, the one I trusted most.
But it was thou, a man mine equal, mine intimate, my familiar friend. …
Because thou hast delivered my soul from death, my feet from falling: that I may please in the sight of God, in the light of the living.
But it is you, the one so close to me, my companion, my good friend, who does this.
But it is you, my best friend! We did things as men together, and I trusted you!
But it is you, a man who served with me, my colleague and my associate,
But it is you, a man, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend.
But it is you, a man, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend.
But it is you, a person like me, my companion and good friend.
But it was thou, O man, even my companion, my guide, and my familiar:
But it is you, my equal, my best friend, one I knew so well!
But it is you, my companion, my colleague and close friend.

But it is you, a person like me. You were my companion and good friend.
but it is you— a man whom I treated as my equal— my personal confidant, my close friend!
But it was thou, who in my estimation was, my lord, and of my own family.
But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.

This isn’t the neighborhood bully mocking me—I could take that. This isn’t a foreign devil spitting invective—I could tune that out. It’s you! We grew up together! You! My best friend! Those long hours of leisure as we walked arm in arm, God a third party to our conversation.
But it was you, my peer, my guide, and my acquaintance.
But it is you, my equal, my best friend, one I knew so well!
For it is not an enemy that reviled me— that I could bear— Not a foe who viewed me with contempt, from that I could hide.
But it is you, a man my equal, My companion and my confidant;
But it is you, a man my equal, My companion and my familiar friend;
If it was an enemy who reviled me, I could endure that. If a foe had treated me with contempt, I could manage to avoid him.
But it is you, a person like me, my companion and good friend.
But it is you, a man like me, my close friend in whom I confided.
But it’s you, someone like myself. It’s my companion, my close friend.
But it is you, a man like myself, my companion, my close friend,

Instead, it is you—my equal, my companion and close friend.

But it was thou, an enosh (a man) equally [valued with myself], my aluf (intimate, friend), and me’yuda’i (deep acquaintance, familiar friend, see Psalm 41:9)

For if it were an enemy taunting me, I could endure it. If my foe was exalting himself over me, I could hide from him.
But it is you! A man like me, my old friend, my companion.

But thou art a man of one will (with me); my leader, and my known. (But thou art a man of one mind with me; my leader, and my dear friend.)
