Some of the redeemed had been sitting in darkness and deep gloom; they were prisoners suffering in chains
Some lived in darkness, in death-dark gloom, bound in misery and iron chains,
Some of you were prisoners suffering in deepest darkness and bound by chains,
Such as inhabit darkness and the shadow of death, bound in affliction and iron,
Moab the pot of my hope. Over Edom I will stretch out my shoe: the aliens are become my friends.
Some of God’s people were prisoners, locked behind bars in dark prisons.
Some people sat in a completely dark place. Iron chains held them as prisoners, and they were very sad.
They were sitting in darkness and the shadow of death, prisoners, bound in misery and chains,
Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and in irons,
Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and in irons,
Some sat in ·gloom [darkness] and ·darkness [deep darkness]; they were prisoners ·suffering [afflicted] in ·chains [irons].

Those who lived in the dark, in death’s shadow were prisoners in misery. They were held in iron chains
Some were living in gloom and darkness, prisoners suffering in chains,
Others sat in darkness and gloom— prisoners in cruel chains—
Some sat in gloom and darkness. They were prisoners suffering in chains.
Some sat in deepest darkness, shackled with cruel iron,
¶ Such as sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and in irons,

There were those who inhabited darkness and the shadow of death, Prisoners in affliction and irons,
Those who sat in darkness and gloom, prisoners of misery and iron—
Who are these who sit in darkness, in the shadow of death, crushed by misery and slavery?
Some of you were locked in a dark cell, cruelly confined behind bars, Punished for defying God’s Word, for turning your back on the High God’s counsel— A hard sentence, and your hearts so heavy, and not a soul in sight to help. Then you called out to God in your desperate condition; he got you out in the nick of time. He led you out of your dark, dark cell, broke open the jail and led you out. So thank God for his marvelous love, for his miracle mercy to the children he loves; He shattered the heavy jailhouse doors, he snapped the prison bars like matchsticks!

They sat in utter darkness, bound in painful iron chains,
Others lived in the deepest darkness. They suffered as prisoners in iron chains.

Those who sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, Bound in affliction and irons—
Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death. They suffered in prison in iron chains.
