As the refining pot for silver and the furnace for gold, so is a man tried by praise.
ASV
The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; And a man is tried by his praise.
AMP
The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold [to separate the impurities of the metal], And each is tested by the praise given to him [and his response to it, whether humble or proud].
AMPC
As the refining pot for silver and the furnace for gold [bring forth all the impurities of the metal], so let a man be in his trial of praise [ridding himself of all that is base or insincere; for a man is judged by what he praises and of what he boasts].
