The king of Ai saw Joshua's army, so the king and his troops hurried out early the next morning to fight them. Joshua and his army pretended to be beaten, and they let the men of Ai chase them toward the desert. The king and his army were facing the Jordan valley as Joshua had planned. The king did not realize that some Israelite soldiers were hiding behind the town.
And Joshua and all Israel let themselves be beaten before them; and they fled by the way of the wilderness.
But Josue, and all Israel gave back, making as if they were afraid, and fleeing by the way of the wilderness.
Joshua and all the men of Israel let the army of Ai push them back. Joshua and his men began running east toward the desert.
Joshua and his army let the men of Ai chase after them. They pretended to be afraid. They ran towards the desert.
Then Joshua and all Israel pretended to be beaten before them and fled toward the wilderness.
And Joshua and all Israel pretended to be beaten before them and fled in the direction of the wilderness.

Joshua and all the men of Israel ·let the army of Ai push them back [pretended to be defeated]. Then they ran toward the ·desert [wilderness].

Because Joshua and the entire fighting force of Israel pretended to lose the battle by running away in front of them toward the wilderness,

Joshua and all Israel let themselves be chased; they ran toward the wilderness. Everybody in the city was called to the chase. They pursued Joshua and were led away from the city. There wasn’t a soul left in Ai or Bethel who wasn’t out there chasing after Israel. The city was left empty and undefended as they were chasing Israel down.
So Joshua and all Israel allowed themselves to be beaten before them, and they fled in the direction of the wilderness.
Joshua and all Israel pretended to be defeated. They ran away toward the desert.
Joshua and the main body of the Israelites fled toward the wilderness, pretending defeat,
