So God made the space and separated the water. Some of the water was above it, and some of the water was below it.
So God made this wide space. He made the water under the space separate from the water that was above it. What God said happened.

So God made the ·air [L firmament; dome; expanse; C rain clouds] and placed some of the water above the ·air [L firmament; dome; expanse] and some below it [C referring to the rain and the oceans, lakes, and rivers].
Then God made the firmament, and separated the waters, which were under the firmament, from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
So God made the horizon and separated the water above and below the horizon. And so it was.
Then God commanded, “Let there be a dome to divide the water and to keep it in two separate places”—and it was done. So God made a dome, and it separated the water under it from the water above it.
So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above the expanse. And it was so.
So God made the air to divide the water in two. Some of the water was above the air, and some of the water was below it.
So God made a canopy that separated the water beneath the canopy from the water above it. And that is what happened:

So God made the vaulted dome, and he caused a separation between the waters which were under the vaulted dome and between the waters which were over the vaulted dome. And it was so.
So God made the sky, dividing the vapor above from the water below. This all happened on the second day.
God spoke: “Sky! In the middle of the waters; separate water from water!” God made sky. He separated the water under sky from the water above sky. And there it was: he named sky the Heavens; It was evening, it was morning— Day Two.
So God made the expanse and separated the waters which were under the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse. And it was so.
So Elohim made the horizon and separated the water above and below the horizon. And so it was.
God made the dome, and it separated the water below the dome from the water above the dome. And so it happened.

And that’s exactly what happened. God made the huge space between the waters. He separated the water under the space from the water above it.
So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so.

Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so.
God made the open space, and divided the waters under the open space from the waters above the open space. And it was so.
And that is what happened. God made this space to separate the waters of the earth from the waters of the heavens.
