The lover of money never has enough money; the lover of luxury never has enough income. This too is pointless.
And since the king is the highest official, he benefits most from the taxes paid on the land.
Moreover the earth is every way profitable: the king [himself] is dependent upon the field.
A covetous man shall not be satisfied with money: and he that loveth riches shall reap no fruit from them: so this also is vanity.
Even the king is a slave—his country owns him.
All of them take something for themselves from the land. The king himself receives his share of the crops.
All officials take their cut of the profit from the land; even the king benefits from the fields.
But this is gain for a land in every way: a king committed to cultivated fields.

¶ And there is higher authority in all of the things of the earth, but he who serves the field is king.

But the advantage of the land in everything is this—a king committed to a cultivated field.
The produce of the land is exploited by everyone; even the king profits from the field of the poor!
And over them all is the king. Oh, for a king who is devoted to his country! Only he can bring order from this chaos.
Don’t be too upset when you see the poor kicked around, and justice and right violated all over the place. Exploitation filters down from one petty official to another. There’s no end to it, and nothing can be done about it. But the good earth doesn’t cheat anyone—even a bad king is honestly served by a field.
But this is an advantage to the land in every way, like a king committed to a cultivated field.
Yet, a king is an advantage for a country with cultivated fields.
The covetous are never satisfied with money, nor lovers of wealth with their gain; so this too is vanity.
After all, a king who cultivates the field is beneficial to the land.

One who is covetous will never be satisfied with money, nor will the lover of wealth be content with gain. This too is vanity.
