All the days of his life he eateth in darkness, and in many cares, and in misery, and sorrow.
It is very sad that people leave the world just as they came. So what does a person gain from “trying to catch the wind”?
This is also a terrible thing to happen. People leave this earth with nothing, as they came into it with nothing. All their hard work has been useless, like someone who tries to catch the wind.
This too is a sickening evil: Just as he came, so he will go. So what does he gain, he who works for the wind?
This also is a grievous evil: just as he came, so shall he go, and what gain is there to him who toils for the wind?

This, as I said, is a very serious problem, for all his hard work has been for nothing; he has been working for the wind. It is all swept away.
Here’s a piece of bad luck I’ve seen happen: A man hoards far more wealth than is good for him And then loses it all in a bad business deal. He fathered a child but hasn’t a cent left to give him. He arrived naked from the womb of his mother; He’ll leave in the same condition—with nothing. This is bad luck, for sure—naked he came, naked he went. So what was the point of working for a salary of smoke? All for a miserable life spent in the dark?
This also is a grievous evil: Just as he came, so shall he go. And what profit is there to him who toils for the wind?

All their days they eat in gloom with great vexation, sickness and resentment.

Here’s something else that is very evil. Everyone is born, and everyone dies. And what do they get for their work? Nothing. It’s like working for the wind.

Utterly it is a wretched sickness; as he came, so he shall turn again. What profiteth it to him, that he travailed into the wind? (Yea, it is utterly a wretched sickness; as he came, so he shall return. What hath it profited him? he hath only laboured for the wind!)
