Ye are not straitened in us, but ye are straitened in your own affections.

There is no limit to our affection for you, but you are limited in your own affection [for us].
There is no lack of room for you in [our hearts], but you lack room in your own affections [for us].
Ye are not straitened in us, but ye are straitened in your own bowels.
We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us.

There are no limits to the affection that we feel for you. You are the ones who placed boundaries on your affection for us.
Any constraint you feel has not been imposed by us, but by your own inner selves.

You are not restrained in us, but you are restrained in your own deep-feelings.
You are not straitened in us, but in your own bowels you are straitened.
Our feelings of love for you have not stopped. It is you who have stopped your feelings of love for us.
We have done nothing to stop you from being our friends. But you have not really wanted to become our friends.
We have plenty of room for you, but you do not have room for us in your affections.
You are not restricted by us, but you are restricted in your own affections.
You are not restricted by us, but you are restricted in your own affections.

Our feelings of love for you have not stopped. It is you that have stopped your feelings of love for us.

Oh, our dear friends in Corinth, we are hiding nothing from you and our hearts are absolutely open to you. Any stiffness between us must be on your side, for we assure you there is none on ours. Do reward me (I talk to you as though you were my own children) with the same complete candour!

Dear, dear Corinthians, I can’t tell you how much I long for you to enter this wide-open, spacious life. We didn’t fence you in. The smallness you feel comes from within you. Your lives aren’t small, but you’re living them in a small way. I’m speaking as plainly as I can and with great affection. Open up your lives. Live openly and expansively! * * *
