“For his letters,” say they, “are weighty and powerful, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.”
For, His letters, they say, are weighty and strong; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech of no account.
for they say, “His letters are weighty and forceful and impressive, but his personal presence is unimpressive and his speech contemptible [of no account].”
For they say, His letters are weighty and impressive and forceful and telling, but his personality and bodily presence are weak, and his speech and delivery are utterly contemptible (of no account).
For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.
For it is said, “His letters are weighty and powerful, but his physical presence is weak and his public speaking amounts to nothing.”
For it is said, ‘His letters are weighty and powerful, but his physical presence is weak and his public speaking amounts to nothing.’
I know what some people are saying: “His letters are severe and powerful, but in person he is weak and his speech is worth nothing.”
Someone says, “His letters are weighty and powerful, but when he appears in person he is weak, and as a speaker he is nothing.”
Some of you are saying, “Paul's letters are harsh and powerful. But in person, he is a weakling and has nothing worth saying.”
because his letters, he says, [are] weighty and strong, but his presence in the body weak, and his speech naught.
Because “The letters”, he says, “are weighty and strong, but the presence of his body is weak, and his speaking is treated-with-contempt”.
(For his epistles indeed, say they, are weighty and strong; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible,)
Some people say, “Paul’s letters are powerful and sound important, but when he is with us, he is weak and the worst speaker you have ever heard.”
Some people say: ‘Paul's letters are powerful and they say strong things. But when he himself is here with us, he seems to be weak. And the words that he speaks have no value.’
For some say, “His letters are weighty and strong, but his physical presence is weak, and his speech amounts to nothing.”
For they say, “His letters are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech of no account.”
For they say, “His letters are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech of no account.”
Some people say [v. 1], “Paul’s letters are ·powerful [forceful] and ·sound important [weighty; or demanding], but ·when he is with us, he [his physical presence] is weak. And his ·speaking is nothing [speaking skills are deplorable; or speeches are worthless; C Greek culture highly valued rhetorical skill].”
For the letters, saith he, are sore and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech is of no value.
I know that someone is saying that my letters are powerful and strong, but that I’m a weakling and a terrible speaker.
Someone will say, “Paul's letters are severe and strong, but when he is with us in person, he is weak, and his words are nothing!”
For it is said, “His letters are weighty and powerful, but his physical presence is weak, and his public speaking is despicable.”
Some people say, “Paul’s letters are powerful and sound important. But when he is with us, he is weak. And his speaking is nothing.”
For someone is saying, “His letters are impressive and forceful, but his bodily presence is weak and his speech contemptible.”
Do look at things which stare you in the face! So-and-so considers himself to belong to Christ. All right; but let him reflect that we belong to Christ every bit as much as he. You may think that I have boasted unduly of my authority (which the Lord gave me, remember, to build you up not to break you down), but I don’t think I have done anything to be ashamed of. Yet I don’t want you to think of me merely as the man who writes you terrifying letters. I know my critics say, “His letters are impressive and moving but his actual presence is feeble and his speaking beneath contempt.” Let them realise that we can be just as “impressive and moving” in person as they say we are in our letters.

“Don’t bother about his letters,” some say. “He sounds big, but it’s all noise. When he gets here you will see that there is nothing great about him, and you have never heard a worse preacher!”
And what’s this talk about me bullying you with my letters? “His letters are brawny and potent, but in person he’s a weakling and mumbles when he talks.” Such talk won’t survive scrutiny. What we write when away, we do when present. We’re the exact same people, absent or present, in letter or in person.

For some are saying, “His letters are weighty and forceful, but his physical presence · is weak, and his rhetoric amounts to nothing.”
I know that someone is saying that my letters are powerful and strong, but that I’m a weakling and a terrible speaker.

Some say, “His letters sound important. They are powerful. But in person he doesn’t seem like much. And what he says doesn’t amount to anything.”
For some say, “His letters are weighty and forceful, but in person he is unimpressive and his speaking amounts to nothing.”
For some say, ‘His letters are weighty and forceful, but in person he is unimpressive and his speaking amounts to nothing.’
“For his letters,” they say, “are weighty and powerful, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.”
They say, “His letters are strong and they make us think. When he is here with us, he is weak and he is hard to listen to.”
For some say, “Paul’s letters are demanding and forceful, but in person he is weak, and his speeches are worthless!”
For the epistles (says he) are strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech is poor.
For they say, ‘His letters are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.’

For they say, "His iggrot indeed are weighty and strong but his physical presence is weak and his shprach (diction), as far as rhetoric is concerned, is despicable."
For indeed they say, “his letters are heavy and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech is of no value.”
For they say, “His letters are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech of no account.”
For they say, “His letters are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech of no account.”

For some people are saying, “Paul’s letters sound authoritative and strong, but in person he just doesn’t measure up—even his speeches don’t deliver.”
For, “His letters”, they say, “are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech is despised.”
Some people say, `Paul's letters make us listen. They are strong. But he himself is weak and what he says is not worth listening to.'
for they say, That epistles be grievous and strong, but the presence of the body is feeble, and the word worthy to be despised.
`because the letters indeed -- saith one -- [are] weighty and strong, and the bodily presence weak, and the speech despicable.'
