wherein they think it strange that you run not with them to the same dissolute excess, speaking evil of you,
wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them into the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:
In [connection with] all this, they [the unbelievers] are resentful and surprised that you do not [think like them, value their values and] run [hand in hand] with them into the same excesses of dissipation and immoral freedom, and they criticize and abuse and ridicule you and make fun of your values.
They are astonished and think it very queer that you do not now run hand in hand with them in the same excesses of dissipation, and they abuse [you].
Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:
They are surprised that you don’t join them in the same flood of wild living—and they slander you.
They are surprised that you don’t join them in the same flood of wild living – and they slander you.
They think it’s strange that you don’t join in these activities with the same flood of unrestrained wickedness. So they slander you.
They think it strange that you don’t plunge with them into the same flood of dissoluteness, and so they heap insults on you.
Now your former friends wonder why you have stopped running around with them, and they curse you for it.
Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with [them] to the same sink of corruption, speaking injuriously [of you];
in connection with which they are thinking-it-strange that you are not running-with them into the same excess of wild-living, while they continue blaspheming—
Wherein they think it strange, that you run not with them into the same confusion of riotousness, speaking evil of you.
Now those “friends” think it is strange that you no longer join them in all the wild and wasteful things they do. And so they say bad things about you.
But now you no longer live in the same wicked way as those people do. They continue to enjoy those wrong things all the time. But you do not join with them. So they insult you.
For this reason, they are surprised that you do not plunge into the same overflowing river of filth with them, and they slander you.
With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you;

Unbelievers insult you now because they are surprised that you no longer join them in the same excesses of wild living.
And now the heathen are surprised when you do not join them in the same wild and reckless living, and so they insult you.
So they are surprised that you don’t plunge with them into the same flood of wild living—and they slander you.
Non-believers think it is strange that you do not do the many wild and wasteful things that they do. And so they insult you.
They insult you now because they are surprised that you are no longer joining them in the same excesses of wild living.
Since Christ had to suffer physically for you, you must fortify yourselves with the same inner attitude that he must have had. You must realise that to be dead to sin inevitably means pain, and you should not therefore spend the rest of your time here on earth indulging your physical nature, but in doing the will of God. Our past life may have been good enough for pagan purposes, though it meant sensuality, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousals and worshipping forbidden gods. Indeed your former companions may think it very queer that you will no longer join with them in their riotous excesses, and accordingly say all sorts of unpleasant things about you. Don’t worry: they are the ones who will have to explain their behaviour before the one who is prepared to judge all men, whether living or dead. (For that is why the dead also had the Gospel preached to them—that it might judge the lives they lived as men and give them also the opportunity to share the eternal life of God in the spirit.)
¶ And it seems strange to those that speak evil of you, that ye do not run with them to the same unchecked dissolution;

In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them into the same excesses of dissipation, maligning you,
with respect to which they are surprised when you do not run with them into the same flood of dissipation, and so they revile you.
Of course, your former friends will be very surprised when you don’t eagerly join them anymore in the wicked things they do, and they will laugh at you in contempt and scorn.
You’ve already put in your time in that God-ignorant way of life, partying night after night, a drunken and profligate life. Now it’s time to be done with it for good. Of course, your old friends don’t understand why you don’t join in with the old gang anymore. But you don’t have to give an account to them. They’re the ones who will be called on the carpet—and before God himself.
They are surprised that you do not join them in the same excess of wild living, and so they speak evil of you.
In all this, they are surprised that you do not plunge with them into the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you.
Unbelievers insult you now because they are surprised that you no longer join them in the same excesses of wild living.
They are surprised that you do not plunge into the same swamp of profligacy, and they vilify you;
In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them in the same excesses of debauchery, and they slander you;

They are surprised that you no longer join them in a life of dissipation, and they revile you as a result.
Nonbelievers think it is strange that you do not do the many wild and wasteful things they do, so they insult you.
So they are astonished when you do not rush with them into the same flood of wickedness, and they vilify you.
Ungodly people are surprised that you no longer join them in what they do. They want you to join them in their wild and wasteful living. So they say bad things about you.
They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.
They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.
In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you.
Those who do not know God are surprised you do not join them in the sinful things they do. They laugh at you and say bad things against you.
Of course, your former friends are surprised when you no longer plunge into the flood of wild and destructive things they do. So they slander you.
And it seems to them a strange thing that you run not also with them to the same excess of disorder, and therefore they speak evil of you.
They are surprised that you no longer join them in the same excesses of dissipation, and so they blaspheme.
They are surprised that you no longer join them in the same excesses of dissipation, and so they blaspheme.

People are shocked that you don’t now join in with the same wild and reckless behavior, and so they call down curses on you.
The Goyim think it strange [4:12] that you are not running with them into the same mabbul (flood) of dissipation, and so they blaspheme and commit Chillul Hashem.
So, it seems strange to them that you do not run with them to the same excess of debauchery, and they speak evil of you.
They are surprised that you do not now join them in the same wild profligacy, and they abuse you;
They are surprised that you do not now join them in the same wild profligacy, and they abuse you;
They are surprised that you do not run with them into the same riot of recklessness, and they vilify you.
When you don’t play the same games they do, they notice that you are living by different rules. That’s why they say such terrible things about you.
They think it is strange that you don’t run with them into the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you.
Those people are surprised now that you do not do the same wrong things they do. And they say wrong things about you.
In which now they be astonished, in which thing they wonder, for ye run not together into the same confusion of lechery, and blaspheme [blaspheming].
