However, since we have gifts that (A)differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to use them properly: if (B)prophecy, [a]in proportion to one’s faith; if [b](C)service, in the act of serving; or the one who (D)teaches, in the act of teaching; or the one who [c](E)exhorts, in the work of [d]exhortation; the one who gives, with [e](F)generosity; (G)the one who [f]is in leadership, with diligence; the one who shows mercy, with (H)cheerfulness.

[g](I)Love must be free of hypocrisy. (J)Detest what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be (K)devoted to one another in brotherly love; [h]give preference to one another (L)in honor, 11 not lagging behind in diligence, (M)fervent in spirit, (N)serving the Lord; 12 (O)rejoicing in hope, (P)persevering in tribulation, (Q)devoted to prayer, 13 (R)contributing to the needs of the [i]saints, [j](S)practicing hospitality.

14 (T)Bless those who persecute [k]you; bless and do not curse. 15 (U)Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 (V)Be of the same mind toward one another; (W)do not be [l]haughty in mind, but [m]associate with the lowly. (X)Do not be wise in your own estimation. 17 (Y)Never repay evil for evil to anyone. [n](Z)Respect what is right in the sight of all people. 18 If possible, (AA)so far as it depends on you, (AB)be at peace with all people. 19 (AC)Never take your own revenge, beloved, but [o]leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written: “(AD)Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 (AE)But if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Love in Action

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”[e](Z)

21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

There is (A)one body and one Spirit, just as you also were called in one (B)hope of your calling; (C)one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all (D)who is over all and through all and in all.

But (E)to each one of us (F)grace was given (G)according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore [a]it says,

(H)When He ascended on high,
He (I)led captive the captives,
And He gave gifts to people.”

(Now this expression, “He (J)ascended,” what [b]does it mean except that He also [c]had descended into (K)the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is Himself also He who ascended (L)far above all the heavens, so that He might (M)fill all things.) 11 And He (N)gave (O)some as apostles, some as prophets, some as (P)evangelists, some as [d]pastors and (Q)teachers, 12 (R)for the equipping of the [e]saints for the work of ministry, for the building up of (S)the body of Christ; 13 until we all attain to (T)the unity of the faith, and of the [f](U)knowledge of the Son of God, to a (V)mature man, to the measure of the stature [g]which belongs to the (W)fullness of Christ. 14 [h]As a result, we are (X)no longer to be children, (Y)tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of people, by (Z)craftiness [i]in (AA)deceitful scheming; 15 but [j]speaking the truth (AB)in love, [k]we are to (AC)grow up in all aspects into Him who is the (AD)head, that is, Christ, 16 from whom (AE)the whole body, being fitted and held together [l]by what every joint supplies, according to the [m]proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself (AF)in love.

The Christian’s Walk

17 (AG)So I say this, and affirm in the Lord, (AH)that you are to no longer walk just as the [n]Gentiles also walk, in the (AI)futility of their minds, 18 being (AJ)darkened in their understanding, [o](AK)excluded from the life of God because of the (AL)ignorance that is in them, because of the (AM)hardness of their heart; 19 and they, having (AN)become callous, (AO)have given themselves up to (AP)indecent behavior [p]for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness. 20 But you did not (AQ)learn Christ in this way, 21 if indeed you (AR)have heard Him and have (AS)been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, 22 that, in reference to your former way of life, you are to (AT)rid yourselves of the (AU)old [q]self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the (AV)lusts of deceit, 23 and that you are to be (AW)renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to (AX)put on the (AY)new [r]self, which [s](AZ)in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

25 Therefore, (BA)ridding yourselves of falsehood, (BB)speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, because we are (BC)parts of one another. 26 (BD)Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and do not (BE)give the devil [t]an opportunity. 28 The one who steals must no longer steal; but rather (BF)he must labor, (BG)producing with his own hands what is good, (BH)so that he will have something to share with the one who has need. 29 Let no [u](BI)unwholesome word come out of your mouth, but if there is any good word for (BJ)edification [v]according to the need of the moment, say that, so that it will give grace to those who hear. 30 (BK)Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, [w]by whom you were (BL)sealed for the day of redemption. 31 (BM)All bitterness, wrath, anger, [x]clamor, and slander must be (BN)removed from you, along with all (BO)malice. 32 (BP)Be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving each other, (BQ)just as God in Christ also has forgiven [y]you.

There is one body(A) and one Spirit,(B) just as you were called to one hope when you were called(C); one Lord,(D) one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all,(E) who is over all and through all and in all.(F)

But to each one of us(G) grace(H) has been given(I) as Christ apportioned it. This is why it[a] says:

“When he ascended on high,
    he took many captives(J)
and gave gifts to his people.”[b](K)

(What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions[c]? 10 He who descended is the very one who ascended(L) higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)(M) 11 So Christ himself gave(N) the apostles,(O) the prophets,(P) the evangelists,(Q) the pastors and teachers,(R) 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ(S) may be built up(T) 13 until we all reach unity(U) in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God(V) and become mature,(W) attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.(X)

14 Then we will no longer be infants,(Y) tossed back and forth by the waves,(Z) and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.(AA) 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love,(AB) we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head,(AC) that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows(AD) and builds itself up(AE) in love,(AF) as each part does its work.

Instructions for Christian Living

17 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer(AG) live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.(AH) 18 They are darkened in their understanding(AI) and separated from the life of God(AJ) because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.(AK) 19 Having lost all sensitivity,(AL) they have given themselves over(AM) to sensuality(AN) so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.

20 That, however, is not the way of life you learned 21 when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off(AO) your old self,(AP) which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;(AQ) 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds;(AR) 24 and to put on(AS) the new self,(AT) created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.(AU)

25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully(AV) to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.(AW) 26 “In your anger do not sin”[d]:(AX) Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold.(AY) 28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work,(AZ) doing something useful with their own hands,(BA) that they may have something to share with those in need.(BB)

29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths,(BC) but only what is helpful for building others up(BD) according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,(BE) with whom you were sealed(BF) for the day of redemption.(BG) 31 Get rid of(BH) all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.(BI) 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another,(BJ) forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.(BK)
