39 Now when Moses spoke (A)these words to all the sons of Israel, (B)the people mourned greatly. 40 In the morning, however, they got up early and went up to the [a]ridge of the hill country, saying, “(C)Here we are; and we will go up to the place which the Lord has [b]promised, for [c]we have sinned.” 41 But Moses said, “(D)Why then are you (E)violating the [d]command of the Lord, when doing so will not succeed?

New International Version
39 When Moses reported this(A) to all the Israelites, they mourned(B) bitterly. 40 Early the next morning they set out for the highest point in the hill country,(C) saying, “Now we are ready to go up to the land the Lord promised. Surely we have sinned!(D)”
41 But Moses said, “Why are you disobeying the Lord’s command? This will not succeed!(E)
