8 Og alt folket samlet sig som en mann på plassen foran Vannporten; og de bad Esras, den skriftlærde, om å hente boken med Mose lov, som Herren hadde gitt Israel.
2 Og presten Esras bar loven frem for menigheten, både for menn og kvinner og alle som kunde forstå hvad de hørte; det var den første dag i den syvende måned.
3 Og han leste op av den midt for plassen foran Vannporten fra tidlig morgen til midt på dagen - for mennene og kvinnene og dem som kunde forstå; og alt folket lyttet til lovbokens ord.
4 Esras, den skriftlærde, stod på en forhøining av tre, som var blitt reist til dette, og ved siden av ham stod Mattitja, Sema, Anaja, Uria, Hilkia og Ma'aseja til høire for ham, og til venstre for ham Pedaja, Misael, Malkia, Hasum, Hasbaddana, Sakarja og Mesullam.
5 Og Esras åpnet boken for alt folkets øine; for han stod høiere enn alt folket; og da han åpnet den, reiste alt folket sig.
6 Esras lovet Herren, den store Gud, og alt folket svarte med opløftede hender: Amen, amen, og de bøide sig og kastet sig ned for Herren med ansiktet til jorden.
7 Og Josva, Bani, Serebja, Jamin, Akkub, Sabbetai, Hodia, Ma'aseja, Kelita, Asarja, Josabad, Hanan, Pelaja og de andre levitter utla loven for folket, mens folket blev stående på sin plass.
8 De leste op av boken - av Guds lov - de tolket og utla den for folket, så de skjønte det som blev lest.
9 Og stattholderen Nehemias og presten Esras, den skriftlærde, og levittene som lærte folket, sa til alt folket: Denne dag er helliget Herren eders Gud, sørg ikke og gråt ikke! For alt folket gråt da de hørte lovens ord.
10 Så sa han til dem: Gå nu og et fete retter og drikk søte drikker og send gaver derav til dem for hvem intet er tillaget, for dagen er helliget vår Herre, og sørg ikke, for glede i Herren er eders styrke!
11 Også levittene søkte å få alt folket til å holde sig rolig og sa: Vær stille, for dagen er hellig; sørg ikke!
12 Da gikk alt folket bort og åt og drakk og sendte gaver omkring og holdt en stor gledesfest; for de hadde forstått det som var blitt talt til dem.
13 Dagen efter samlet alt folkets familiehoder, prestene og levittene sig hos Esras, den skriftlærde, for å få nærmere rede på lovens ord.
14 De fant da skrevet i loven - den lov som Herren hadde gitt ved Moses - at Israels barn skulde bo i løvhytter på festen i den syvende måned,
15 og at de skulde kunngjøre og la utrope i alle sine byer og i Jerusalem: Gå ut på fjellene og hent løv av oljetrær og av ville oljetrær og av myrter og av palmer og av andre løvrike trær og gjør løvhytter, som foreskrevet er.
16 Da gikk folket ut og hentet løv, og de gjorde sig løvhytter, hver på sitt tak og på sine tun og likeledes i forgårdene til Guds hus og på plassen ved Vannporten og på plassen ved Efra'im-porten.
17 Og hele menigheten, de som var kommet tilbake fra fangenskapet, gjorde løvhytter og bodde i dem; for fra Josvas, Nuns sønns dager like til denne dag hadde Israels barn ikke gjort dette. Og der var en overmåte stor glede.
18 Dag efter dag leste de op av Guds lovbok, fra den første dag til den siste; de holdt høitid i syv dager og på den åttende dag en festlig sammenkomst, som påbudt var.

8 1 all the people came together as one in the square before the Water Gate.(A) They told Ezra the teacher of the Law to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses,(B) which the Lord had commanded for Israel.
2 So on the first day of the seventh month(C) Ezra the priest brought the Law(D) before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand. 3 He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate(E) in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law.
4 Ezra the teacher of the Law stood on a high wooden platform(F) built for the occasion. Beside him on his right stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah and Maaseiah; and on his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah and Meshullam.
5 Ezra opened the book. All the people could see him because he was standing(G) above them; and as he opened it, the people all stood up. 6 Ezra praised the Lord, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands(H) and responded, “Amen! Amen!” Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.
7 The Levites(I)—Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan and Pelaiah—instructed(J) the people in the Law while the people were standing there. 8 They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear[a] and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read.
9 Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites(K) who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.”(L) For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.
10 Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing(M) prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy(N) of the Lord is your strength.”
11 The Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be still, for this is a holy day. Do not grieve.”
12 Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to celebrate with great joy,(O) because they now understood the words that had been made known to them.
13 On the second day of the month, the heads of all the families, along with the priests and the Levites, gathered around Ezra the teacher to give attention to the words of the Law. 14 They found written in the Law, which the Lord had commanded through Moses, that the Israelites were to live in temporary shelters(P) during the festival of the seventh month 15 and that they should proclaim this word and spread it throughout their towns and in Jerusalem: “Go out into the hill country and bring back branches from olive and wild olive trees, and from myrtles, palms and shade trees, to make temporary shelters”—as it is written.[b]
16 So the people went out and brought back branches and built themselves temporary shelters on their own roofs, in their courtyards, in the courts of the house of God and in the square by the Water Gate(Q) and the one by the Gate of Ephraim.(R) 17 The whole company that had returned from exile built temporary shelters and lived in them.(S) From the days of Joshua son of Nun until that day, the Israelites had not celebrated(T) it like this. And their joy was very great.
18 Day after day, from the first day to the last, Ezra read(U) from the Book of the Law(V) of God. They celebrated the festival for seven days, and on the eighth day, in accordance with the regulation,(W) there was an assembly.(X)
