^67 (A)Then they ^(B)spit in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others ^[a]slapped Him, ⁶⁸ and said, “^(C)Prophesy to us, You ^[b]Christ; who is the one who hit You?”

Peter’s Denials

^69 (D)Now Peter was sitting outside in the ^(E)courtyard, and a slave woman came to him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean.” ⁷⁰ But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about.” ⁷¹ When he had gone out to the gateway, another slave woman saw him and *said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” ⁷² And again he denied it, with an oath: “I do not know the man.” ⁷³ A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “You really are one of them as well, ^(F)since even the way you talk ^[c]gives you away.” ⁷⁴ Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed. ⁷⁵ And Peter remembered the statement that Jesus had ^[d]made: “^(G)Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

⁶⁵ And some began to ^(A)spit on Him, and ^[a](B)to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists and say to Him, “^(C)Prophesy!” Then the officers took custody of Him ^[b]and slapped Him in the face.

²² But when He said this, one of the ^(A)officers, who was standing nearby, ^(B)struck Jesus, saying, “Is that the way You answer the high priest?” ^23 (C)Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?” ^24 (D)So Annas sent Him bound to ^(E)Caiaphas the high priest.

Peter’s Denial of Jesus

^25 (F)Now ^(G)Simon Peter was still standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “^(H)You are not one of His disciples as well, are you?” He denied it, and said, “I am not.” ²⁶ One of the slaves of the high priest, who was related to the one ^(I)whose ear Peter cut off, *said, “Did I not see you in ^(J)the garden with Him?” ²⁷ Peter then denied it again, and immediately ^(K)a rooster crowed.

Jesus before Pilate

^28 (L)Then they *brought Jesus from ^(M)Caiaphas into ^(N)the ^[a]Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter ^(O)the ^[b]Praetorium, so that ^(P)they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. ^29 (Q)Therefore Pilate came out to them and *said, “What accusation are you bringing against this Man?” ³⁰ They answered and said to him, “If this Man were not ^[c]a criminal, we would not have handed Him over to you.” ³¹ So Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “We are not ^[d]permitted to put anyone to death.” ³² This happened so that ^(R)the word of Jesus which He said, indicating what kind of death He was going to die, would be fulfilled.

³³ Therefore Pilate ^(S)entered the Praetorium again, and summoned Jesus and said to Him, “^(T)You are the King of the Jews?” ³⁴ Jesus answered, “Are you saying this ^[e]on your own, or did others tell you about Me?” ³⁵ Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed You over to me; what have You done?” ³⁶ Jesus answered, “^(U)My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not ^[f]of this realm.” ³⁷ Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “^(V)You say correctly that I am a king. For this purpose I have been born, and for this I have come into the world: ^(W)to testify to the truth. ^(X)Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.” ³⁸ Pilate *said to Him, “What is truth?”

And after saying this, he ^(Y)came out again to the Jews and *said to them, “^(Z)I find no grounds at all for charges in ^[g]His case. ^39 (AA)However, you have a custom that I release one prisoner ^[h]for you at the Passover; therefore do you wish that I release ^[i]for you the King of the Jews?” ⁴⁰ So they shouted again, saying, “^(AB)Not this Man, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a rebel.
