11 Yet later, the other virgins also came, saying, ‘(A)Lord, lord, open up for us.’ 12 But he answered, ‘Truly I say to you, I do not know you.’ 13 (B)Be on the alert then, because you do not know the day nor the hour.

Parable of the Talents

14 (C)For it is just like a man (D)about to go on a journey, who called his own slaves and entrusted his possessions to them. 15 To one he gave five [a](E)talents, to another, two, and to another, one, each according to his own ability; and he (F)went on his journey. 16 The one who had received the five (G)talents immediately went and did business with them, and earned five more talents. 17 In the same way the one who had received the two talents earned two more. 18 But he who received the one talent went away and dug a hole in the ground, and hid his [b]master’s money.

19 “Now after a long time the master of those slaves *came and *(H)settled accounts with them. 20 The one who had received the five (I)talents came up and brought five more talents, saying, ‘Master, you entrusted five talents to me. See, I have earned five more talents.’ 21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and (J)faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will (K)put you in charge of many things; enter the joy of your [c]master.’

22 “Also the one who had received the two (L)talents came up and said, ‘Master, you entrusted two talents to me. See, I have earned two more talents.’ 23 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and (M)faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter the joy of your master.’

24 “Now the one who had received the one (N)talent also came up and said, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed. 25 And I was afraid, so I went away and hid your talent in the ground. See, you still have what is yours.’

26 “But his master answered and said to him, ‘You [d]worthless, lazy slave! Did you know that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter seed? 27 Then you ought to have [e]put my money in the bank, and [f]on my arrival I would have received my money back with interest. 28 Therefore: take the talent away from him, and give it to the one who has the ten talents.’

29 (O)For to everyone who has, more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away. 30 And throw the worthless slave into (P)the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The Judgment

31 “But when (Q)the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then (R)He will sit on His glorious throne. 32 And all the nations will be (S)gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, (T)just as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; 33 and He will put the sheep (U)on His right, but the goats (V)on the left.

34 “Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, (W)inherit the kingdom prepared for you (X)from the foundation of the world. 35 For (Y)I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; (Z)I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; 36 (AA)naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you (AB)visited Me; (AC)I was in prison, and you came to Me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? 38 And when did we see You as a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? 39 And when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40 And (AD)the King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, (AE)to the extent that you did it for one of the least of these brothers or sisters of Mine, you did it for Me.’

41 “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘(AF)Depart from Me, you accursed people, into the (AG)eternal fire which has been prepared for (AH)the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink; 43 I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.’ 44 Then they themselves also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or as a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not [g]take care of You?’ 45 Then He will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it for one of the least of these, you did not do it for Me, either.’ 46 These will go away into (AI)eternal punishment, but the righteous into (AJ)eternal life.”

The Parable of the Bags of Gold(C)

14 “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey,(D) who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. 15 To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag,[a] each according to his ability.(E) Then he went on his journey. 16 The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. 17 So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. 18 But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.

19 “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.(F) 20 The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’

21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.(G) Come and share your master’s happiness!’

22 “The man with two bags of gold also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two bags of gold; see, I have gained two more.’

23 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.(H) Come and share your master’s happiness!’

24 “Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’

26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.

28 “‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. 29 For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.(I) 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’(J)

The Sheep and the Goats

31 “When the Son of Man comes(K) in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.(L) 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate(M) the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.(N) 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom(O) prepared for you since the creation of the world.(P) 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,(Q) 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me,(R) I was sick and you looked after me,(S) I was in prison and you came to visit me.’(T)

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’(U)

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me,(V) you who are cursed, into the eternal fire(W) prepared for the devil and his angels.(X) 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’(Y)

46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.(Z)(AA)

  1. Matthew 25:15 Greek five talents … two talents … one talent; also throughout this parable; a talent was worth about 20 years of a day laborer’s wage.

25 Once the head of the house gets up and (A)shuts the door, and you begin standing outside and knocking on the door, saying, ‘(B)Lord, open up to us!’ and He then will answer and say to you, ‘(C)I do not know where you are from.’ 26 Then you will (D)begin saying, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets!’ 27 And yet He will [a]say, ‘(E)I do not know where you are from; (F)leave Me, all you [b]evildoers.’ 28 (G)In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves being thrown out. 29 And they (H)will come from east and west, and from north and south, and will recline at the table in the kingdom of God. 30 And behold, (I)some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

31 At that very time some Pharisees approached, saying to Him, “Go away and leave this place, because (J)Herod wants to kill You.” 32 And He said to them, “Go and tell that [c]fox, ‘Behold, I am casting out demons and performing healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I [d](K)reach My goal.’ 33 Nevertheless (L)I must go on My journey today and tomorrow and the next day; for it cannot be that a (M)prophet would perish outside Jerusalem. 34 (N)Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who have been sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, (O)just as a hen gathers her [e]young under her wings, and you were unwilling! 35 Behold, your house is left to you desolate; and I say to you, you will not see Me until you say, ‘(P)Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord!’”

26 “Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’

28 “There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth,(C) when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out. 29 People will come from east and west(D) and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God. 30 Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last.”(E)

Jesus’ Sorrow for Jerusalem(F)(G)

31 At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, “Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod(H) wants to kill you.”

32 He replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.’(I) 33 In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day—for surely no prophet(J) can die outside Jerusalem!

34 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,(K) and you were not willing. 35 Look, your house is left to you desolate.(L) I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’[a](M)
