35 [c](C)James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, *came up to [d]Jesus, saying to Him, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You.” 36 And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?” 37 They said to Him, “[e]Grant that we (D)may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory.” 38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able (E)to drink the cup that I drink, or (F)to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 They said to Him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink (G)you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized. 40 But to sit on My right or on My left is not Mine to give; (H)but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”
41 (I)Hearing this, the other ten began to feel indignant with [f]James and John. 42 Calling them to Himself, Jesus *said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles domineer over them; and their [g]people in high position exercise authority over them. 43 But it is not this way among you; (J)rather, whoever wants to become [h]prominent among you shall be your servant; 44 and whoever wants to be first among you shall be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man (K)did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His [i]life as a ransom for many.”
Bartimaeus Receives His Sight
46 (L)Then they *came to Jericho. And later, (M)as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, a beggar who was blind named Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the road. 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus the (N)Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, (O)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 Many were sternly telling him to be quiet, but he kept crying out all the more, “(P)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him here.” So they *called the man who was blind, saying to him, “(Q)Take courage, stand up! He is calling for you.” 50 And throwing off his cloak, he jumped up and came to Jesus. 51 And replying to him, Jesus said, “What do you want Me to do for you?” And the man who was blind said to Him, “[j](R)Rabboni, I want to regain my sight!” 52 And Jesus said to him, “Go; (S)your faith has [k]made you well.” And immediately he regained his sight and began following Him on the road.

The Request of James and John(H)
35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”
36 “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.
37 They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”(I)
38 “You don’t know what you are asking,”(J) Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup(K) I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?”(L)
39 “We can,” they answered.
Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with,(M) 40 but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.”
41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. 42 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,(N) 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve,(O) and to give his life as a ransom for many.”(P)
Blind Bartimaeus Receives His Sight(Q)
46 Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth,(R) he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David,(S) have mercy on me!”
48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”
So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” 50 Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.
51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him.
The blind man said, “Rabbi,(T) I want to see.”
52 “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.”(U) Immediately he received his sight and followed(V) Jesus along the road.

Bartimaeus Receives Sight
35 (C)Now as [c](D)Jesus was approaching Jericho, a man who was blind was sitting by the road, begging. 36 But when he heard a crowd going by, he began inquiring what this was. 37 They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. 38 And he called out, saying, “Jesus, (E)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 39 Those who led the way were sternly telling him to be quiet; but he kept crying out all the more, “(F)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 40 And Jesus stopped and commanded that he be brought to Him; and when he came near, He asked him, 41 “What do you want Me to do for you?” And he said, “Lord, I want to regain my sight!” 42 And Jesus said to him, “Regain your sight; (G)your faith has [d]made you well.” 43 And immediately he regained his sight and began following Him, (H)glorifying God; and when (I)all the people saw it, they gave praise to God.

39 Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”(L)
40 Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, 41 “What do you want me to do for you?”
“Lord, I want to see,” he replied.
42 Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.”(M) 43 Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.(N)

44 Now Jesus cried out and said, “(Z)The one who believes in Me, does not believe only in Me, but also in Him who sent Me. 45 And (AA)the one who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. 46 (AB)I have come as Light into the world, so that no one who believes in Me will remain in darkness. 47 If anyone hears My [f]teachings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for (AC)I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. 48 (AD)The one who rejects Me and does not [g]accept My [h]teachings has one who judges him: (AE)the word which I spoke. 34 The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law(D) that the Messiah will remain forever,(E) so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man(F) must be lifted up’?(G) Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”
35 Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light(H) just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light,(I) before darkness overtakes you.(J) Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. 36 Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.”(K) When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.(L)
Belief and Unbelief Among the Jews
37 Even after Jesus had performed so many signs(M) in their presence, they still would not believe in him. 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet:
39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:
40 “He has blinded their eyes
and hardened their hearts,
so they can neither see with their eyes,
nor understand with their hearts,
nor turn—and I would heal them.”[c](O)
41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory(P) and spoke about him.(Q)
42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him.(R) But because of the Pharisees(S) they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;(T) 43 for they loved human praise(U) more than praise from God.(V)
44 Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.(W) 45 The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.(X) 46 I have come into the world as a light,(Y) so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
47 “If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.(Z) 48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them(AA) at the last day. 49 For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me(AB) to say all that I have spoken. 50 I know that his command leads to eternal life.(AC) So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”(AD)
