44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.(A) 45 Philip found Nathanael(B) and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law,(C) and about whom the prophets also wrote(D)—Jesus of Nazareth,(E) the son of Joseph.”(F)

46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?”(G) Nathanael asked.

“Come and see,” said Philip.

47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite(H) in whom there is no deceit.”(I)

48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.

Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”

21 these people then came to (A)Philip, who was from (B)Bethsaida of Galilee, and were making a request of him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip *came and *told (C)Andrew; then Andrew and Philip *came and *told Jesus. 23 But Jesus *answered them by saying, (D)The hour has come for the Son of Man to (E)be glorified. 24 Truly, truly I say to you, (F)unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 (G)The one who loves his [a]life loses it, and the one who (H)hates his [b]life in this world will keep it [c]to eternal life. 26 If anyone [d]serves Me, he must follow Me; and (I)where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone [e]serves Me, the Father will (J)honor him.

Jesus Foretells His Death

27 (K)Now My soul has become troubled; and what am I to say? ‘(L)Father, save Me from (M)this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. 28 (N)Father, glorify Your name.” Then a (O)voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.” 29 So the crowd who stood by and heard it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, “(P)An angel has spoken to Him!” 30 Jesus responded and said, (Q)This voice has not come for My sake, but for yours. 31 (R)Now judgment is upon this world; now (S)the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 And I, if I (T)am lifted up from the earth, will (U)draw all people to Myself.” 33 Now He was saying this (V)to indicate what kind of death He was going to die. 34 The crowd then answered Him, “We have heard from (W)the Law that (X)the [f]Christ is to remain forever; and how is it that You say, ‘The (Y)Son of Man must be (Z)lifted up’? Who is this (AA)Son of Man?” 35 So Jesus said to them, (AB)For a little while longer (AC)the Light is among you. (AD)Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; also, the one who (AE)walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the Light, (AF)believe in the Light, so that you may become (AG)sons of Light.”

These things Jesus proclaimed, and He went away and (AH)hid Himself from them. 37 But though He had performed so many [g]signs in their sight, they still were not believing in Him. 38 This happened so that the word of Isaiah the prophet which he spoke would be fulfilled: “(AI)Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” 39 For this reason they could not believe, for Isaiah said again, 40 (AJ)He has blinded their eyes and He (AK)hardened their heart, so that they will not see with their eyes and understand with their heart, and [h]be converted, and so I will not heal them.” 41 These things Isaiah said because (AL)he saw His glory, and (AM)he spoke about Him. 42 Nevertheless (AN)many, even of (AO)the rulers, believed in Him, but (AP)because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, so that they would not be (AQ)excommunicated from the synagogue; 43 (AR)for they loved the [i]approval of people rather than the [j]approval of God.

44 Now Jesus cried out and said, (AS)The one who believes in Me, does not believe only in Me, but also in Him who sent Me. 45 And (AT)the one who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. 46 (AU)I have come as Light into the world, so that no one who believes in Me will remain in darkness. 47 If anyone hears My [k]teachings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for (AV)I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. 48 (AW)The one who rejects Me and does not [l]accept My [m]teachings has one who judges him: (AX)the word which I spoke. That will judge him on (AY)the last day. 49 (AZ)For I did not speak [n]on My own, but the Father Himself who sent Me (BA)has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak. 50 And I know that (BB)His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak (BC)just as the Father has told Me.”

21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida(A) in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.

23 Jesus replied, “The hour(B) has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.(C) 24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies,(D) it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it(E) for eternal life.(F) 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be.(G) My Father will honor the one who serves me.

27 “Now my soul is troubled,(H) and what shall I say? ‘Father,(I) save me from this hour’?(J) No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name!”

Then a voice came from heaven,(K) “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.

30 Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit,(L) not mine. 31 Now is the time for judgment on this world;(M) now the prince of this world(N) will be driven out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up[a] from the earth,(O) will draw all people to myself.”(P) 33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.(Q)

34 The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law(R) that the Messiah will remain forever,(S) so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man(T) must be lifted up’?(U) Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”

35 Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light(V) just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light,(W) before darkness overtakes you.(X) Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. 36 Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.”(Y) When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.(Z)

Belief and Unbelief Among the Jews

37 Even after Jesus had performed so many signs(AA) in their presence, they still would not believe in him. 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet:

“Lord, who has believed our message
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”[b](AB)

39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:

40 “He has blinded their eyes
    and hardened their hearts,
so they can neither see with their eyes,
    nor understand with their hearts,
    nor turn—and I would heal them.”[c](AC)

41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory(AD) and spoke about him.(AE)

42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him.(AF) But because of the Pharisees(AG) they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;(AH) 43 for they loved human praise(AI) more than praise from God.(AJ)

44 Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.(AK) 45 The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.(AL) 46 I have come into the world as a light,(AM) so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.

47 “If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.(AN) 48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them(AO) at the last day. 49 For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me(AP) to say all that I have spoken. 50 I know that his command leads to eternal life.(AQ) So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”(AR)

21 The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.

22 Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.

23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.

24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.

28 Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.

29 The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.

30 Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.

31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

33 This he said, signifying what death he should die.

34 The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?

35 Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.

36 While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.

37 But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:

38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?

39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,

40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

41 These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.

42 Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:

43 For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

44 Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.

45 And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.

46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.

50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?

10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.

12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?

23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.

25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.

26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.

30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.

31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.
