11 And after they came into the house, they saw the Child with (A)His mother Mary; and they fell down and [a](B)worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And after being (C)warned by God (D)in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi left for their own country by another way.

The Escape to Egypt

13 Now when they had gone, behold, an (E)angel of the Lord *(F)appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to kill Him.”

14 So [b]Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt. 15 He [c]stayed there until the death of Herod; this happened so that what had been spoken by the Lord through [d]the prophet would be fulfilled: “(G)Out of Egypt I called (H)My Son.”

Herod Slaughters Babies

16 Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by (I)the magi, he became very enraged, and sent men and (J)killed all the boys who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity [e]who were two years old or under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi. 17 Then what had been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:

18 (K)A voice was heard in Ramah,
Weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children;
And she refused to be comforted,
Because they were no more.”

19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord *(L)appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said, 20 “Get up, take the Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel; for those who sought the Child’s life are dead.” 21 So [f]Joseph got up, took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Then after being (M)warned by God in a dream, he left for the regions of Galilee, 23 and came and settled in a city called (N)Nazareth. This happened so that what was spoken through the prophets would be fulfilled: “He will be called a (O)Nazarene.”

11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.(A) Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts(B) of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned(C) in a dream(D) not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

The Escape to Egypt

13 When they had gone, an angel(E) of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.(F) “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”(G)

14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled(H) what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”[a](I)

16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:(J)

The Return to Nazareth

21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream,(P) he withdrew to the district of Galilee,(Q) 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth.(R) So was fulfilled(S) what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.(T)

33 And His father and (A)mother were amazed at the things which were being said about Him. 34 And Simeon blessed them and said to (B)His mother Mary, “Behold, this Child is appointed for (C)the fall and [a]rise of many in Israel, and as a sign to be [b]opposed— 35 and a sword will pierce your own soul—to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”

36 And there was a (D)prophetess, [c]Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of (E)the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in [d]years (F)and had lived with her husband for seven years after her [e]marriage, 37 and then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She did not leave the temple grounds, serving night and day with (G)fasts and prayers. 38 And at that very [f]moment she came up and began giving thanks to God, and continued to speak about Him to all those who were (H)looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.

Visit to Jerusalem

41 His parents went to Jerusalem every year at (K)the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up there according to the custom of the feast; 43 and as they were returning, after spending the (L)full number of days required, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but His parents were unaware of it. 44 Instead, they thought that He was somewhere in the caravan, and they went a day’s journey; and then they began looking for Him among their relatives and acquaintances. 45 And when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for Him. 46 Then, after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Him (M)were amazed at His understanding and His answers. 48 When Joseph and Mary saw Him, they were bewildered; and (N)His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You treated us this way? Behold, (O)Your father and I have been anxiously looking for You!” 49 And He said to them, “Why is it that you were looking for Me? Did you not know that (P)I had to be in My Father’s [h]house?” 50 And yet (Q)they on their part did not understand the statement which He had [i]made to them. 51 And He went down with them and came to (R)Nazareth, and He continued to be subject to them; and (S)His mother (T)treasured all these [j]things in her heart.

52 And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and [k]stature, and in (U)favor with God and people.

36 There was also a prophet,(C) Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. The Boy Jesus at the Temple

41 Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover.(I) 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. 43 After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. 44 Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed(J) at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother(K) said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father(L) and I have been anxiously searching for you.”

49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”[b](M) 50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them.(N)

51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them(O) and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.(P) 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.(Q)

25 (A)Now beside the cross of Jesus stood (B)His mother, His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and (C)Mary Magdalene. 26 So when Jesus saw His mother, and (D)the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He *said to His mother, (E)Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then He *said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her into (F)his own household.

28 After this, Jesus, (G)knowing that all things had already been accomplished, (H)in order that the Scripture would be fulfilled, *said, (I)I am thirsty.” 29 A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so (J)they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. 30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, (K)It is finished!” And He bowed His head and (L)gave up His spirit.

Care of the Body of Jesus

31 Now then, since it was (M)the day of preparation, to prevent (N)the bodies from remaining on the cross on the Sabbath ([a]for that Sabbath was a (O)high day), the Jews requested of Pilate that their legs be broken, and the bodies be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man, and of the other who was (P)crucified with Him; 33 but after they came to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 Yet one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately (Q)blood and water came out. 35 And he who has seen has (R)testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. 36 For these things took place (S)so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “(T)Not a bone of Him shall be [b]broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, “(U)They will look at Him whom they pierced.”

38 Now (V)after these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a (W)secret one for (X)fear of the [c]Jews, requested of Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body. 39 (Y)Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, (Z)bringing a [d]mixture of (AA)myrrh and aloes, about a [e](AB)hundred litras weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and (AC)bound it in (AD)linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden was a (AE)new tomb (AF)in which no one had yet been laid. 42 Therefore because of the Jewish day of (AG)preparation, since the tomb was (AH)nearby, they laid Jesus there.

25 Near the cross(A) of Jesus stood his mother,(B) his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.(C) 26 When Jesus saw his mother(D) there, and the disciple whom he loved(E) standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman,[a] here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

The Death of Jesus(F)

28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished,(G) and so that Scripture would be fulfilled,(H) Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar(I) was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.”(J) With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

31 Now it was the day of Preparation,(K) and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses(L) during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.(M) 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced(N) Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.(O) 35 The man who saw it(P) has given testimony, and his testimony is true.(Q) He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled:(R) “Not one of his bones will be broken,”[b](S) 37 and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”[c](T)

The Burial of Jesus(U)

38 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders.(V) With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. 39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus,(W) the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.[d] 40 Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen.(X) This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.(Y) 41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. 42 Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation(Z) and since the tomb was nearby,(AA) they laid Jesus there.
