Other Appearances

36 Now while they were telling these things, (A)Jesus Himself suddenly stood in their midst and *said to them, “Peace be to you.” 37 But they were startled and frightened, and thought that they were looking at (B)a spirit. 38 And He said to them, “Why are you frightened, and why are doubts arising in your [a]hearts? 39 (C)See My hands and My feet, that [b]it is I Myself; (D)touch Me and see, because a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you plainly see that I have.” 40 And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. 41 While they still [c](E)could not believe it because of their joy and astonishment, He said to them, (F)Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They served Him a piece of broiled fish; 43 and He took it and (G)ate it in front of them.

44 Now He said to them, (H)These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all the things that are written about Me in the (I)Law of Moses and the Prophets and (J)the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then He (K)opened their [d]minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and He said to them, (L)So it is written, that the [e]Christ would suffer and (M)rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and that (N)repentance [f]for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed [g]in His name to (O)all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are (P)witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, (Q)I am sending the promise of My Father upon you; but (R)you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

The Ascension

50 And He led them out as far as (S)Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. 51 While He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they, after worshiping Him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple [h]praising God.

Jesus Appears to the Disciples

36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”(A)

37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.(B) 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see;(C) a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”

40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.(D)

44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you:(E) Everything must be fulfilled(F) that is written about me in the Law of Moses,(G) the Prophets(H) and the Psalms.”(I)

45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer(J) and rise from the dead on the third day,(K) 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name(L) to all nations,(M) beginning at Jerusalem.(N) 48 You are witnesses(O) of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised;(P) but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

The Ascension of Jesus

50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany,(Q) he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.(R) 52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they stayed continually at the temple,(S) praising God.

To [a]these (A)He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of (B)things regarding the kingdom of God. [b]Gathering them together, He commanded them (C)not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for [c](D)what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me; for (E)John baptized [d]with water, but you will be baptized [e]with the Holy Spirit [f](F)not many days from now.”

So, when they had come together, they began asking Him, saying, “Lord, (G)is it at this time that You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” But He said to them, “It is not for you to know periods of time or appointed times which (H)the Father has set by His own authority; but you will receive power (I)when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be (J)My witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and (K)Samaria, and as far as (L)the remotest part of the earth.”

The Ascension

And after He had said these things, (M)He was lifted up while they were watching, and a cloud took Him up, out of their sight. 10 And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, then behold, (N)two men in white clothing stood beside them, 11 and they said, “(O)Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who (P)has been taken up from you into heaven, will (Q)come in the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”

The Upper Room

12 Then they (R)returned to Jerusalem from the [g](S)mountain called [h]Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a [i]Sabbath day’s journey away. 13 When they had entered the city, they went up to (T)the upstairs room where they were staying, that is, (U)Peter, John, [j]James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, [k]James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and (V)Judas the [l]son of [m]James. 14 All these (W)were continually devoting themselves with one [n]mind to prayer, along with (X)the women, and Mary the (Y)mother of Jesus, and with His (Z)brothers.

15 [o]At this time Peter stood up among (AA)the brothers and sisters (a group of about 120 [p]people was there together), and said, 16 [q]Brothers, (AB)the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David concerning Judas, (AC)who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. 17 For he was (AD)counted among us and received his share in (AE)this ministry.” 18 (Now this man (AF)acquired a field with (AG)the price of his wickedness, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines gushed out. 19 And it became known to all the residents of Jerusalem; as a result that field was called Hakeldama in (AH)their own language, that is, Field of Blood.) 20 “For it is written in the book of Psalms:

(AI)May his residence be made desolate,
And may there be none living in it’;

and,

(AJ)May another take his [r]office.’

21 Therefore it is necessary that of the men who have accompanied us all the time that (AK)the Lord Jesus went in and out [s]among us— 22 (AL)beginning [t]with the baptism of John until the day that He (AM)was taken up from us—one of these must become a (AN)witness with us of His resurrection.” 23 So they put forward two men, Joseph called Barsabbas (who was also called Justus), and (AO)Matthias. 24 And they (AP)prayed and said, “You, Lord, who (AQ)know the hearts of all people, show which one of these two You have chosen 25 to [u]occupy (AR)this ministry and (AS)apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” 26 And they [v](AT)drew lots for them, and the lot fell [w]to (AU)Matthias; and he was added to (AV)the eleven apostles.

After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them(A) over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.(B) On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait(C) for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.(D) For John baptized with[a] water,(E) but in a few days you will be baptized with[b] the Holy Spirit.”(F)

Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore(G) the kingdom to Israel?”

He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.(H) But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you;(I) and you will be my witnesses(J) in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria,(K) and to the ends of the earth.”(L)

After he said this, he was taken up(M) before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.

10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white(N) stood beside them. 11 “Men of Galilee,”(O) they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back(P) in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”

Matthias Chosen to Replace Judas

12 Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem(Q) from the hill called the Mount of Olives,(R) a Sabbath day’s walk[c] from the city. 13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room(S) where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.(T) 14 They all joined together constantly in prayer,(U) along with the women(V) and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.(W)

15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) 16 and said, “Brothers and sisters,[d](X) the Scripture had to be fulfilled(Y) in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas,(Z) who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus. 17 He was one of our number(AA) and shared in our ministry.”(AB)

18 (With the payment(AC) he received for his wickedness, Judas bought a field;(AD) there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. 19 Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language(AE) Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)

20 “For,” said Peter, “it is written in the Book of Psalms:

“‘May his place be deserted;
let there be no one to dwell in it,’[e](AF)

and,

“‘May another take his place of leadership.’[f](AG)

21 Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, 22 beginning from John’s baptism(AH) to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness(AI) with us of his resurrection.”

23 So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. 24 Then they prayed,(AJ) “Lord, you know everyone’s heart.(AK) Show us(AL) which of these two you have chosen 25 to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” 26 Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.(AM)
