²¹ And each stood in his place around the camp; and ^(A)all the ^[a]army ran, crying out as they fled.

⁸ So he struck them ^[a]ruthlessly with a great slaughter; and afterward he went down and lived in the cleft of the rock of Etam.

¹⁵ Then he found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, so he reached out with his hand and took it, and ^[a]killed ^(A)a thousand men with it. ¹⁶ And Samson said,

¹⁷ When he had finished speaking, he threw the jawbone from his hand; and he named that place ^[d]Ramath-lehi. ¹⁸ Then he became very thirsty, and he ^(B)called to the Lord and said, “You have ^[e]handed this great ^[f]victory over to Your servant, and now ^[g]am I to die of thirst ^[h]and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?” ¹⁹ But God split the hollow place that is in Lehi so that water came out of it. When he drank, ^(C)his ^[i]strength returned and he revived. Therefore he named it ^[j]En-hakkore, which is in Lehi to this day. ²⁰ So ^(D)he judged Israel for twenty years in ^(E)the days of the Philistines.

⁵¹ Then David ran and stood over the Philistine, and ^(A)took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and finished him, and cut off his head with it. ^(B)When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. ⁵² Then the men of Israel and Judah rose up and shouted, and they pursued the Philistines ^[a]as far as the valley, and to the gates of ^(C)Ekron. And the Philistine dead ^[b]lay along the way to ^(D)Shaaraim, even to Gath and Ekron. ⁵³ Then the sons of Israel returned from their close pursuit of the Philistines, and plundered their camps. ⁵⁴ And David took the Philistine’s head and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his weapons in his tent.

⁵⁵ Now when Saul had seen David going out against the Philistine, he said to Abner the commander of the army, “Abner, whose son is ^(E)this young man?” And Abner said, “By your life, O king, I do not know.” ⁵⁶ And the king said, “You then, ask whose son the youth is.” ⁵⁷ So when David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and ^(F)brought him before Saul with the Philistine’s head in his hand. ⁵⁸ Then Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, young man?” And David answered, “^(G)I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”

David’s Triumphs

8 ^(A)Now it happened afterward that David ^[a]defeated the Philistines and subdued them; and David took ^[b]control of the chief city from the hand of the Philistines.

^2 (B)And He ^[c]defeated ^(C)Moab, and measured them with the line, making them lie down on the ground; and he measured two lines to put to death, and a full line to keep alive. And ^(D)the Moabites became servants to David, ^(E)bringing tribute.

³ Then David ^[d]defeated ^(F)Hadadezer, the son of Rehob king of Zobah, as ^(G)he went to restore his ^[e]power at the Euphrates River. ⁴ And David captured from him ^[f]1,700 horsemen and twenty thousand foot soldiers; and David ^(H)hamstrung almost all the chariot horses, but left enough of them for a hundred chariots. ⁵ When ^(I)the Arameans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer, king of Zobah, David ^[g]killed twenty-two thousand men among the Arameans. ⁶ Then David put garrisons among the Arameans of Damascus, and ^(J)the Arameans became servants to David, bringing tribute. And ^(K)the Lord helped David wherever he went.

¹⁵ When the Arameans saw that they had been ^[a]defeated by Israel, they assembled together. ^16 (A)And Hadadezer sent word and brought out the Arameans who were beyond the Euphrates River, and they came to Helam; and ^(B)Shobach the commander of the army of Hadadezer ^[b]led them. ¹⁷ Now when it was reported to David, he gathered all Israel together and crossed the Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Arameans lined up against David and fought him. ¹⁸ But the Arameans fled from Israel, and David killed ^(C)seven hundred charioteers of the Arameans and forty thousand horsemen, and struck Shobach the commander of their army, and he died there. ¹⁹ When all the kings, servants of Hadadezer, saw that they had been ^[c]defeated by Israel, ^(D)they made peace with Israel and served them. So the Arameans were afraid to help the sons of Ammon anymore.
