¹² Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”^(A)

⁴ But you, brothers, are not in darkness, for that day to overtake you like a thief.^{(A) 5} For all of you are children of the light^[a] and children of the day. We are not of the night or of darkness. ⁶ Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do, but let us stay alert and sober.^{(B) 7} Those who sleep go to sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. ⁸ But since we are of the day, let us be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love and the helmet that is hope for salvation.^(C)

⁸ And yet I do write a new commandment to you, which holds true in him and among you,^[a] for the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining.^(A)

⁷ in truthful speech, in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness at the right and at the left;^(A)

⁴ for the weapons of our battle are not of flesh but are enormously powerful, capable of destroying fortresses. We destroy arguments^(A)

¹¹ Take no part in the fruitless works of darkness; rather expose them,^(A)

¹³ Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground.^{(A) 14} So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate,^{(B) 15} and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace.^{(C) 16} In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all [the] flaming arrows of the evil one.^{(D) 17} And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.^(E)
