41 Others were saying, “This is the [a]Christ.” But others were saying, “(A)Surely the [b]Christ is not coming from Galilee, is He? 42 Has the Scripture not said that the Christ comes from (B)the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So (C)a dissension occurred in the crowd because of Him. 44 And (D)some of them wanted to arrest Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

45 The (E)officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?” 46 The (F)officers answered, “(G)Never has a man spoken in this way!” 47 The Pharisees then replied to them, “(H)You have not been led astray too, have you? 48 (I)Not one of (J)the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he? 49 But this crowd that does not know the Law is accursed!” 50 (K)Nicodemus (the one who came to Him before, being one of them) *said to them, 51 (L)Our Law does not judge the person unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?” 52 They answered and said to him, “(M)You are not from Galilee as well, are you? Examine the Scriptures, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.” 53 [[[c]And everyone went to his home.

Footnotes

  1. John 7:41 I.e., Messiah
  2. John 7:41 I.e., Messiah
  3. John 7:53 Later mss add the story of the adulterous woman, numbering it as John 7:53-8:11

41 Others said, “He is the Messiah.”

Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee?(A) 42 Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants(B) and from Bethlehem,(C) the town where David lived?” 43 Thus the people were divided(D) because of Jesus. 44 Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.(E)

Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders

45 Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”

46 “No one ever spoke the way this man does,”(F) the guards replied.

47 “You mean he has deceived you also?”(G) the Pharisees retorted. 48 “Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?(H) 49 No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.”

50 Nicodemus,(I) who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, 51 “Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”

52 They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”(J)

[The earliest manuscripts and many other ancient witnesses do not have John 7:53—8:11. A few manuscripts include these verses, wholly or in part, after John 7:36, John 21:25, Luke 21:38 or Luke 24:53.]

53 Then they all went home,

41 Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee?

42 Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?

43 So there was a division among the people because of him.

44 And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.

45 Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?

46 The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.

47 Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?

48 Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?

49 But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.

50 Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)

51 Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?

52 They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.

53 And every man went unto his own house.
