^4 (A)Remain in Me, ^[a]and I in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit ^[b]of itself ^[c]but must remain in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in Me. ⁵ I am the vine, you are the branches; the one who remains in Me, and I in him ^[d](B)bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. ⁶ If anyone does not remain in Me, he is ^(C)thrown away like a branch and dries up; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. ⁷ If you remain in Me, and My words remain in you, ^(D)ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. ⁸ My ^(E)Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so ^[e](F)prove to be My disciples. ⁹ Just as ^(G)the Father has loved Me, I also have loved you; remain in My love. ^10 (H)If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love; just as ^(I)I have kept My Father’s commandments and remain in His love. ^11 (J)These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your ^(K)joy may be made full.

Disciples’ Relation to Each Other

¹² “This is ^(L)My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. ^13 (M)Greater love has no one than this, that a person will ^(N)lay down his life for his friends. ¹⁴ You are My ^(O)friends if ^(P)you do what I command you. ¹⁵ No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, because ^(Q)all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. ^16 (R)You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and ^(S)bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that ^(T)whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. ¹⁷ This ^(U)I command you, that you love one another.

Disciples’ Relation to the World

¹⁸ “^(V)If the world hates you, ^[f]you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. ¹⁹ If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but ^(W)I chose you out of the world, ^(X)because of this the world hates you. ²⁰ Remember the word that I said to you, ‘^(Y)A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, ^(Z)they will persecute you as well; if they ^(AA)followed My word, they will follow yours also. ²¹ But all these things they will do to you ^(AB)on account of My name, ^(AC)because they do not know the One who sent Me. ^22 (AD)If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have ^[g]sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. ²³ The one who hates Me hates My Father also. ^24 (AE)If I had not done among them ^(AF)the works which no one else did, they would not have ^[h]sin; but now they have both seen and hated Me and My Father as well. ²⁵ But this has happened so that the word that is written in their ^(AG)Law will be fulfilled: ‘^(AH)They hated Me for no reason.’

²⁶ “When the ^[i](AI)Helper comes, ^(AJ)whom I will send to you from the Father, namely, ^(AK)the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, ^(AL)He will testify about Me, ²⁷ and ^[j](AM)you are testifying as well, because you have been with Me ^(AN)from the beginning.

^23 (A)I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected ^[a]in unity, so that the world may ^[b]know that ^(B)You sent Me, and You ^(C)loved them, just as You loved Me.

²⁴ As for you, see that what you heard ^(A)from the beginning remains in you. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, you also ^(B)will remain in the Son and in the Father.

²⁴ The one who ^(A)keeps His commandments ^(B)remains in Him, and He in him. ^(C)We know by this that ^(D)He remains in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

^15 (A)Whoever confesses that ^(B)Jesus is the Son of God, God ^(C)remains in him, and he in God. ^16 (D)We have come to know and have believed the love which God has ^[a](E)for us. ^(F)God is love, and the one who ^(G)remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him. ¹⁷ By this, ^(H)love is perfected with us, so that we may have ^(I)confidence in ^(J)the day of judgment; because ^(K)as He is, we also are in this world. ¹⁸ There is no fear in love, but ^(L)perfect love drives out fear, because fear ^[b]involves punishment, and the one who fears is not ^(M)perfected in love. ^19 (N)We love, because He first loved us. ^20 (O)If someone says, “I love God,” and yet he ^(P)hates his brother or sister, he is a ^(Q)liar; for ^(R)the one who does not love his brother and sister whom he has seen, ^(S)cannot love God, whom he has not seen. ²¹ And ^(T)this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God ^(U)must also love his brother and sister.
