They will come on you in full measure

31 “Behold, (A)I am against you, [a]arrogant one,”
Declares the Lord [b]God of armies,
“For your day has come,
The time [c]when I will punish you.
32 The [d](B)arrogant one will stumble and fall
With no one to raise him up;
And I will (C)set fire to his cities,
And it will devour all his surroundings.”
33 This is what the Lord of armies says:
“The sons of Israel are oppressed,
And the sons of Judah as well;
And (D)all who took them captive have held them firmly,
They have refused to let them go.
34 Their (E)Redeemer is strong, (F)the Lord of armies is His name;
He will vigorously (G)plead their case
So that He may (H)bring rest to their land,
But turmoil to the inhabitants of Babylon.
35 A (I)sword against the Chaldeans,” declares the Lord,
“And against the inhabitants of Babylon
And against her (J)leaders and her (K)wise men!
36 A sword against the (L)oracle priests, and they will become fools!
A sword against her (M)warriors, and they will be [e](N)shattered!
37 A sword against [f]their (O)horses, against [g]their chariots,
And against all the [h](P)foreigners who are in the midst of her,
And they will become (Q)women!
A sword against her treasures, and they will be plundered!
38 A [i](R)drought on her waters, and they will be dried up!
For it is a land of (S)idols,
And they go insane at frightful images.
39 “Therefore the (T)desert creatures will live there with the jackals;
The ostriches also will live in it.
It will (U)never again be inhabited
Nor lived in from generation to generation.
40 As when God overthrew (V)Sodom
And Gomorrah with its neighbors,” declares the Lord,
“No one will live there,
Nor will [j]anyone of mankind reside in it.
41 “Behold, a people is coming (W)from the north,
And a great nation and many kings
Will be roused from the remote parts of the earth.
42 They (X)seize their bow and javelin;
They are (Y)cruel and have no mercy.
Their (Z)voice roars like the sea;
And they ride on (AA)horses,
(AB)Drawn up like a man for the battle
Against you, daughter of Babylon.
43 The (AC)king of Babylon has heard the report about them,
And his hands hang limp;
(AD)Distress has gripped him,
Agony like a woman in childbirth.
44 “(AE)Behold, one will come up like a lion from the thicket of the Jordan to a perennially watered pasture; for in an instant I will chase them away from it, and I will appoint over it whoever is (AF)chosen. For who is (AG)like Me, and who will summon Me into court? And who then is the shepherd who can (AH)stand against Me?” 45 Therefore hear the (AI)plan of the Lord which He has planned against Babylon, and His purposes which He has in mind against the land of the Chaldeans: (AJ)they will certainly drag them off, even the little ones of the flock; He will certainly make their pasture desolate because of them. 46 At the [k]shout, “Babylon has been conquered!” the (AK)earth quakes, and an (AL)outcry is heard among the nations.

31 “See, I am against(A) you, you arrogant one,”
declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
“for your day(B) has come,
the time for you to be punished.
32 The arrogant(C) one will stumble and fall(D)
and no one will help her up;(E)
I will kindle a fire(F) in her towns
that will consume all who are around her.”
33 This is what the Lord Almighty says:
“The people of Israel are oppressed,(G)
and the people of Judah as well.
All their captors hold them fast,
refusing to let them go.(H)
34 Yet their Redeemer(I) is strong;
the Lord Almighty(J) is his name.
He will vigorously defend their cause(K)
so that he may bring rest(L) to their land,
but unrest to those who live in Babylon.
35 “A sword(M) against the Babylonians!”(N)
declares the Lord—
“against those who live in Babylon
and against her officials and wise(O) men!
36 A sword against her false prophets!
They will become fools.
A sword against her warriors!(P)
They will be filled with terror.(Q)
37 A sword against her horses and chariots(R)
and all the foreigners in her ranks!
They will become weaklings.(S)
A sword against her treasures!(T)
They will be plundered.
38 A drought on[a] her waters!(U)
They will dry(V) up.
For it is a land of idols,(W)
idols that will go mad with terror.
39 “So desert creatures(X) and hyenas will live there,
and there the owl will dwell.
It will never again be inhabited
or lived in from generation to generation.(Y)
40 As I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah(Z)
along with their neighboring towns,”
declares the Lord,
“so no one will live there;
no people will dwell in it.(AA)
41 “Look! An army is coming from the north;(AB)
a great nation and many kings
are being stirred(AC) up from the ends of the earth.(AD)
42 They are armed with bows(AE) and spears;
they are cruel(AF) and without mercy.(AG)
They sound like the roaring sea(AH)
as they ride on their horses;
they come like men in battle formation
to attack you, Daughter Babylon.(AI)
43 The king of Babylon has heard reports about them,
and his hands hang limp.(AJ)
Anguish has gripped him,
pain like that of a woman in labor.(AK)
44 Like a lion coming up from Jordan’s thickets(AL)
to a rich pastureland,
I will chase Babylon from its land in an instant.
Who is the chosen(AM) one I will appoint for this?
Who is like me and who can challenge me?(AN)
And what shepherd can stand against me?”
45 Therefore, hear what the Lord has planned against Babylon,
what he has purposed(AO) against the land of the Babylonians:(AP)
The young of the flock will be dragged away;
their pasture will be appalled at their fate.
46 At the sound of Babylon’s capture the earth will tremble;(AQ)
its cry(AR) will resound among the nations.

38 A drought is upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it is the land of graven images, and they are mad upon their idols.
39 Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell there, and the owls shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation.
40 As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the Lord; so shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein.
41 Behold, a people shall come from the north, and a great nation, and many kings shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth.
42 They shall hold the bow and the lance: they are cruel, and will not shew mercy: their voice shall roar like the sea, and they shall ride upon horses, every one put in array, like a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon.
43 The king of Babylon hath heard the report of them, and his hands waxed feeble: anguish took hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in travail.
44 Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan unto the habitation of the strong: but I will make them suddenly run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me?
45 Therefore hear ye the counsel of the Lord, that he hath taken against Babylon; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitation desolate with them.
46 At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth is moved, and the cry is heard among the nations.
