It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth,(A) just as the Father commanded us.

For I (A)was very glad when (B)brethren came and testified to your truth, that is, how you (C)are walking in truth. I have no greater joy than [a]this, to hear of (D)my children (E)walking in the truth.

Beloved, you are acting faithfully in whatever you accomplish for the (F)brethren, and [b]especially when they are (G)strangers; and they have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to (H)send them on their way in a manner (I)worthy of God. For they went out for the sake of (J)the Name, (K)accepting nothing from the Gentiles. Therefore we ought to [c]support such men, so that we may [d]be fellow workers [e]with the truth.

I wrote something to the church; but Diotrephes, who loves to (L)be first among them, does not accept [f]what we say. 10 For this reason, (M)if I come, I will call attention to his deeds which he does, unjustly accusing us with wicked words; and not satisfied with this, he himself does not (N)receive the (O)brethren, either, and he forbids those who desire to do so and (P)puts them out of the church.

11 Beloved, (Q)do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. (R)The one who does good is of God; (S)the one who does evil has not seen God. 12 Demetrius (T)has received a good testimony from everyone, and from the truth itself; and we add our testimony, and (U)you know that our testimony is true.

13 (V)I had many things to write to you, but I am not willing to write them to you with pen and ink; 14 but I hope to see you shortly, and we will speak face to face.

15 (W)Peace be to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends (X)by name.

It gave me great joy when some believers(A) came and testified about your faithfulness to the truth, telling how you continue to walk in it.(B) I have no greater joy than to hear that my children(C) are walking in the truth.(D)

Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers and sisters,[a](E) even though they are strangers to you.(F) They have told the church about your love. Please send them on their way(G) in a manner that honors(H) God. It was for the sake of the Name(I) that they went out, receiving no help from the pagans.(J) We ought therefore to show hospitality to such people so that we may work together for the truth.

I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will not welcome us. 10 So when I come,(K) I will call attention to what he is doing, spreading malicious nonsense about us. Not satisfied with that, he even refuses to welcome other believers.(L) He also stops those who want to do so and puts them out of the church.(M)

11 Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good.(N) Anyone who does what is good is from God.(O) Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.(P) 12 Demetrius is well spoken of by everyone(Q)—and even by the truth itself. We also speak well of him, and you know that our testimony is true.(R)

13 I have much to write you, but I do not want to do so with pen and ink. 14 I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face.(S)

Peace to you.(T) The friends here send their greetings. Greet the friends there by name.(U)
