Nethanel

NETHANEL nĭ thăn’ əl (נְתַנְאֵ֖ל, gift of God); KJV NETHANEEL. 1. Nethanel, the son of Zuar, was a prince, representative of the tribe of Issachar in Moses’ organization of Israel at Sinai (Num 1:8; 2:5; 7:18, 23; 10:15).

2. A son of Jesse, older brother of David (1 Chron 2:14).

3. A priest who blew the trumpet before the Ark when the Ark was brought up from the house of Obed-edom (15:24).

4. Father of Shemaiah, a Levite and scribe in David’s organization of the priestly service (24:6).

5. One of the sons of Obed-edom, a gatekeeper in the Temple organization (26:4).

6. One of the princes sent out by Jehoshaphat to teach in the cities of Judah (2 Chron 17:7).

7. A Levite, one of the brothers of Conaniah, who contributed to the preparations for the great passover of Josiah (2 Chron 35:9; 1 Esd 1:9).

8. One of the sons of Pashhur (Ezra 10:22). In the time of Ezra some of the sons of priests who had married foreign women pledged themselves to put away their wives. Nethanel appears to be included in the group (cf. v. 44). He is the Nathanael of 1 Esdras 9:22, and may be the same as 10 below.

9. Nehemiah 12:12-21 lists sons of priests named in vv. 1-7, who had lived in the days of Joshua’s successor, Joiakim. Jedaiah is named in v. 7 and again in v. 21 in connection with his descendant, Nethanel. The larger context (Neh 11:1-12:26) is a listing of the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

10. The account of the dedication of the walls and organization of Temple services is found in Nehemiah 12:27-47. The one column marching around the city on the wall (v. 31) included certain priests’ sons, among whom was found Nethanel (v. 36). He was a trumpeter. Perhaps the same as 8 above.
