NERGAL nûr’ găl (נֵרְגַ֣ל). Theophoric element found in the personal name Nergal-Sharezer (Jer 39:3, 13). He was the god of pestilence, disease and various calamities who could be appeased by incantations. He was worshiped with consort Ereshkigal at cult center of Cuthah, NE of Babylon. Temples at various other sites (Larsa, Isin, Assur) were dedicated to him. Nergal was worshiped by men of Cuth after being settled in the province of Samaria by the Assyrians (2 Kings 17:30).
