NAHSHON nä’ shŏn (נַחְשֹׁ֖ון, Ναασσών, G3709, KJV has NAASHON, in Exod 6:23 and NAHSHON in Matt 1:4 and Luke 3:32, meaning uncertain). A son of Amminadab of the tribe of Judah.

Nahshon led the tribe of Judah as they camped in the wilderness (Num 2:3; 7:12-17). Since this tribe led the way when the whole nation moved, Nahshon was an important man (10:14).

Nahshon’s sister Elisheba married Aaron (Exod 6:23). Nahshon’s lineage included Salma, Boaz, Obed, Jesse, and David (Ruth 4:20ff.; 1 Chron 2:10ff.). Being of the tribe of Judah and a progenitor of David, Nahshon was thus an ancestor of our Lord. His name occurs in the genealogies of Matthew 1 and Luke 3.
