Mortal

MORTAL, the KJV renders the common Heb. term אֱנﯴשׁ, a loan word from Aram. as “mortal” only in Job 4:17. The RSV renders it in the same fashion; elsewhere, however, it is simply read “man.” The NT Gr. term is θνητός, G2570, “mortal,” literally “subject to death.” It appears widely in classical Gr. lit. and is tr. “mortal” by KJV in Romans 6:12; 8:11; 1 Corinthians 15:53, 54; 2 Corinthians 4:11, while the occurrence in 2 Corinthians 5:4 is rendered as “mortality” (KJV) though “mortal” is to be preferred. The notion is not Platonic as has been proposed and does not divide into the Attic form-matter scheme. It simply differentiates between the mortal, commonplace sphere of life and the immortal, spiritual sphere.
