Mischief Maker

MISCHIEF MAKER. Mischief, a word almost uniformly occurring in KJV for a variety of Heb. terms denoting evil, injury, etc.; e.g. אָ֫וֶנ֒, H224, trouble, sorrow, wickedness (Ps 5:6; 36:4; Prov 17:4; Ezek 11:2); הﯴָה, H2096, (Job 6:2; Ps 52:2); זִמָּה֒, H2365, evil device, wicked act (Ps 26:10; 119:150; Prov 10:23); עָמָל֒, H6662, trouble, evil (Job 15:35; Pss 7:14; 10:7; Prov 24:2); רַע֒, H8273, bad, harmful (Exod 32:22; 1 Sam 23:9; 1 Kings 11:25; 20:7; Neh 6:2; Pss 28:3; 52:1; 140:2; Prov 6:18; 11:27; Dan 11:27; Hos 7:15). Translated “mischief” less frequently in ASV and RSV, where not always in agreement, it is tr. by “iniquity,” “trouble,” “destruction,” “wickedness,” “evil,” “harm,” “wrong.” Activating verbs vary, such as plot, devise, follow, do, practice, conceive, set on, seek, boast in, search for, bent on, run to, plan, imagine. Some words combine sense of noun with action, see verbs רָעַע֒, H8317, do injury, hurt (Prov 4:16), הָתַת, H2254, shout at, threaten, attack (Ps 62:3). In NT ̔ραδιουργία, ease in doing, facility, or, knavery, unscrupulousness (Acts 13:10), tr. mischief (KJV), villainy (ASV, RSV), charlatan (NEB).
