Meraioth

MERAIOTH mĭ rā’ yŏth (מְרָיﯴת׃֙, LXX Μαρερωθ, Μαρερώθ, Μαρ(α, G1) ιώθ, Μαρμώθ, Μαριμώθ, Μαρειήλ, meaning uncertain; possibly derived from the root which means bitter [cf. Ruth 1:20]). A masculine personal name. The name was used only for descendants of Aaron’s priestly family. The grandfather of Ahitub and great-grandfather of Zadok (1 Chron 6:6, 7, 52 and Ezra 7:3) bear the name. The son of a later Ahitub and father of one Zadok (1 Chron 9:11; Neh 11:11) has the same name. These names reoccur through the generations in the Aaronic household. The reference to Meraioth (Neh 12:15) is a problem because the LXX gives Marioth, a different name; but the LXX vacillates by also giving Marmoth in 1 Chronicles 9:11 where the context demands Meraioth.
