Measuring Reed

MEASURING REED (Heb. קָנֶה, H7866, meaning a “reed,” a “stalk”). The word is developed in all Indo-European languages also. It is connected with Heb. מָדַד, H4499, “to measure.” An identical expression exists in Babylonian and Assyrian and is found in the postexilic writings (Ezek 40:3, et al.). The length of such rods would have varied over any given period of time, but they prob. were about ten ft., slightly over three meters in length. A Gr. equivalent, καλαμος appears in Revelation 11:1; 21:15, 16, where it appears to be a literal quotation from the LXX tr. of the Ezekiel 40:3 passage.
