Mattithiah

MATTITHIAH măt’ ĭ thī a (מַתִּתְיָה׃֙, mattityah; מַתִּתְיָ֜הוּ; gift of the Lord). 1. A Kohathite Levite of Korah’s line being the first-born of Shallum, whose charge was the baked offerings in the house of God (1 Chron 9:31). This is apparently the same as the one on Ezra’s right hand when the law was read (Neh 8:4; 1 Esd 9:43 MATTATHIAH KJV, RSV MATTATHIAS).

2. A musician, son of Jeduthun (1 Chron 25:3), among those appointed by the Levites at David’s behest, to accompany the Ark to Zion with instrumental music and song (15:16, 18, 21). Later this man was appointed by lot to lead the fourteenth course of musicians (25:21).

3. A son of a certain Nebo, whose “strange wife” was divorced at Ezra’s persuasion (Ezra 10:43).

4. One of the attendants of Ezra during the reading of the law before the assembled people (Neh 8:4). See 1.

5. 1 Chronicles 16:5 may list another, but he may be the same as No. 2.
