Magdalene

MAGDALENE măg’ də lēn (Μαγδαληνή, G3402, signifying of Magdala. This was evidently the name of a village on the western shore of the Lake of Galilee, about three m. N of Tiberias.

One of the many Marys in the NT is identified as Mary Magdalene—literally, “Mary the Magdalene.” This would be necessary in order to distinguish her from the other Marys associated with Jesus. See Mary 6.

The term is found only in the four gospels, where it occurs twelve (TR) times (Matt 27:56, 61; 28:1; Mark 15:40, 47; 16:1, [9]; Luke 8:2; 24:10; John 19:25; 20:1, 18). It will readily be seen that all of these, except for one in Luke, are associated with the crucifixion or resurrection. Mary Magdalene was the first to see Jesus after He rose from the dead.
