Landmark

LANDMARK (גְּבוּל, H1473, boundary). An inscribed stone on which the boundaries of fields, districts, and nations were defined (Gen 31:51, 52). To remove a landmark was a serious offense. In Babylonia it was a crime, and it was forbidden in Egypt, Greece, and Rome. The law of Moses warns against the removal of landmarks (Deut 19:14; 27:17). The removal of landmarks also is used in Scripture symbolically of overturning ancient customs or laws (Prov 22:28; 23:10; cf. Job 24:2).
