LAKE (λίμνη, G3349). The word is used in Luke 5:1, 2; 8:22, 23, 33 of the Lake of Gennesaret or Sea of Galilee, and Revelation 19:20; 20:10, 14, 15; 21:8 of the “lake that burns with fire and brimstone.” There are not many lakes in Syria and Palestine. Among the most important are: the Dead Sea; the “waters of Merom” (Josh 11:5, 7); Yammuneh, in the Lebanon W of Baalbek; and some small lakes E of Damascus into which the rivers of Damascus flow and are evaporated.
