Daughter

DAUGHTER (Heb. בַּת֒, H1426, the regular fem. form of the common Sem. בֵּנ֒, H1201, “son”). It is used irrespective of age for a proximate circle of female relatives, even for members of a group as “daughters of Zion” (Isa 3:16, et al.). Any female relative thus defined was prohibited from marriage or sexual activity with any male to whom she held the relationship. The Levitical code is very clear on this point (Lev 18:9-18). Although applied to classes of females, “daughters of X,” the term is considerably less common than such constructions as “son/sons.” The word is compounded in some names as, Bath-rab-bim=daughter of a multitude; Bath-shua=daughter of Shua; Bath-sheba=daughter of abundance. In some rare occasions the KJV mistakes “bath” for beth and thus transliterations such as Bath-Zachariah (1 Macc 6:32, 33) occur. In the NT the common Gr. θυγάτηρ, G2588, “daughter” is used throughout (Matt 9:18, et al.) and as in the LXX to tr. Heb. bāt. (Matt 21:5, et al.). See Family.
