Dart

DART. Several words are so rendered although none is unambiguously a dart. שְׁבָטִ֜ים, is used in 2 Samuel 18:14 as Joab kills Absalom. Usually, שֵׁ֫בֶט, H8657, means “rod, scepter, staff.” שֶׁ֛לַח, in 2 Chronicles 32:5 is some sort of “missile, weapon,” based on the root “to send.” מַסָּ֣ע, in Job 41:26, a hapax legomenon, is one of the weapons which cannot affect Leviathan. “Missile” or “dart” may be correct. תּﯴתָ֑ח, is prob. a “club, mace,” but its parallelism to “javelin” in Job 41:29, lends some weight to the rendering “dart.” כִּידֹֽון, ordinarily tr. “javelin,” could also be a dart (1 Sam 17:45).

The Gr. βέλος, G1018, is used in Ephesians 6:16 of the “flaming darts” which Satan unleashes in his attacks on believers. Here again, “arrows” may be intended.
