Three study resources, open beside John 3:16. Trusted insights from the scholars and pastors, right at your fingertips.

Passage
John 3:16 · NIV
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Resources For John 3:16
Expositor’s Bible Commentary
PLUS Expositor’s Bible Commentary
16 Commentators are divided as to whether vv.16-21 are a direct continuation of the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus or represent only the author's comment on Jesus' words. In either case, they express the most important message of the Gospel, emphasized elsewhere in many ways, that salvation is a gift received only by believing God for it.

3:16 See NIV text note on v. 15. God so loved the world. The great truth that motivated God’s plan of salvation (cf. 1Jn 4:9–10). “So” here means “in this way” rather than “so much.” world. All people on earth—and perhaps all creation (see notes on 1:4,9). gave his one and only Son. Cf. Isa 9:6 (“a son is given,” referring to the Messianic Son of David—who is also God’s Son [see 2Sa 7:14 and note]).
Believer’s Bible Commentary
PLUS Believer’s Bible Commentary
3:16 This is one of the best known verses in all the Bible, doubtless because it states the gospel so clearly and simply. It summarizes what the Lord Jesus had been teaching Nicodemus concerning the manner by which the new birth is received. God, we read, so loved the world. The world here includes all mankind. God does not love men’s sins or the wicked world system, but He loves people and is not willing that any should perish.
