Nikodemo Amwendea Yesu Usiku
3 Kiongozi mmoja wa Wayahudi wa kundi la Mafarisayo aitwaye Nikodemo, 2 alimjia Yesu usiku akamwambia, “Rabi, tunafahamu kuwa wewe ni mwalimu uliyetumwa na Mungu; kwa maana hakuna mtu awezaye kufanya miujiza hii uifanyayo, kama Mungu hayupo pamoja naye.”
3 Yesu akamjibu, “Ninakwambia hakika, mtu asipozaliwa mara ya pili, hawezi kuuona Ufalme wa Mungu.”
4 Nikodemo akasema, “Inawezekanaje mtu mzima azaliwe? Anaweza kuingia tena katika tumbo la mama yake na kuzaliwa mara ya pili?”
5 Yesu akamwambia, “Ninakuambia hakika, kama mtu hakuzaliwa kwa maji na kwa Roho hawezi kuingia katika Ufalme wa Mungu. 6 Mtu huzaliwa kimwili na wazazi wake, lakini mtu huzaliwa kiroho na Roho wa Mungu. 7 Kwa hiyo usishangae ninapokuambia kwamba huna budi kuzaliwa mara ya pili. 8 Upepo huvuma po pote upendapo. Mvumo wake unausikia lakini huwezi ukafahamu utokako wala uen dako. Ndivyo ilivyo kwa kila mtu aliyezaliwa kwa Roho.” 9 Nikodemo akamwuliza, “Mambo haya yanawezekanaje?” 10 Yesu akamwambia, “Wewe ni mwalimu mashuhuri wa Waisraeli na huyaelewi mambo haya? 11 Ninakwambia kweli, sisi tunazungumza lile tunalo lijua na tunawashuhudia lile tuliloliona, lakini hamtaki kutu amini! 12 Ikiwa hamuniamini ninapowaambia mambo ya duniani, mtaniaminije nitakapowaambia habari za mbinguni? 13 Hakuna mtu ye yote ambaye amewahi kwenda juu mbinguni isipokuwa mimi Mwana wa Adamu niliyeshuka kutoka mbinguni. 14 Na kama Musa alivyomwi nua yule nyoka kule jangwani, vivyo hivyo mimi Mwana wa Adamu sina budi kuinuliwa juu 15 ili kila mtu aniaminiye awe na uzima wa milele . 16 “Kwa maana Mungu aliupenda ulimwengu kiasi cha kumtoa Mwanae pekee, ili kila mtu amwaminiye asipotee, bali awe na uzima wa milele. 17 Maana Mungu hakumtuma Mwanae kuuhukumu ulimwengu bali auokoe ulimwengu. 18 Amwaminiye yeye hahukumiwi; asiyeamini amekwisha kuhukumiwa; kwa sababu hakumwamini Mwana pekee wa Mungu. 19 Na hukumu yenyewe ni kwamba: Nuru imekuja ulimwenguni lakini watu wakapenda giza kuliko nuru kwa sababu matendo yao ni maovu. 20 Kwa kuwa kila mtu atendaye maovu huchu kia nuru, wala hapendi kuja kwenye nuru ili matendo yake maovu yasifichuliwe. 21 Lakini kila mtu anayeishi maisha ya uaminifu huja kwenye nuru, kusudi iwe wazi kwamba matendo yake yanatokana na utii kwa Mungu.”

22 Baadaye, Yesu alikwenda katika jimbo la Yudea pamoja na wanafunzi wake akakaa nao kwa muda na pia akabatiza watu. 23 Yohana naye alikuwa akibatiza watu huko Ainoni karibu na Sal imu kwa sababu huko kulikuwa na maji mengi. Watu walikuwa wakim fuata huko naye akawabatiza. 24 Wakati huo Yohana alikuwa bado hajafungwa gerezani.
25 Ukazuka ubishi kati ya wanafunzi kadhaa wa Yohana na Myahudi mmoja kuhusu swala la kutawadha. 26 Basi wakamwendea Yohana wakamwambia, “Rabi, yule mtu aliyekuwa pamoja nawe nga’mbo ya pili ya mto wa Yordani, yule uliyeshuhudia habari zake, sasa anabatiza na kila mtu anamwendea!” 27 Yohana akawa jibu, “Mtu hawezi kuwa na kitu kama hakupewa na Mungu. 28 Ninyi wenyewe ni mashahidi wangu kwamba nilisema mimi si Kristo ila nimetumwa nimtangulie. 29 Bibi harusi ni wa bwana harusi. Lakini rafiki yake bwana harusi anayesimama karibu na kusikiliza, hufu rahi aisikiapo sauti ya bwana harusi. Sasa furaha yangu imekamil ika. 30 Yeye hana budi kuwa mkuu zaidi na mimi niwe mdogo zaidi.”
Aliyetoka Mbinguni
31 “Yeye aliyekuja kutoka mbinguni ni mkuu kuliko wote. Anayetoka duniani ni wa dunia, naye huzungumza mambo ya hapa duniani. Yeye aliyekuja kutoka mbinguni, yu juu ya watu wote. 32 Anayashuhudia yale aliyoyaona na kuyasikia lakini hakuna anayekubali maneno yake. 33 Lakini ye yote anayekubali maneno yake, anathibitisha kwamba aliyosema Mungu ni kweli. 34 Yeye aliyetumwa na Mungu husema maneno ya Mungu kwa maana Mungu amempa Roho wake pasipo kipimo. 35 Baba anampenda Mwanae na amempa mam laka juu ya vitu vyote. 36 Ye yote anayemwamini Mwana ana uzima wa milele; asiyemtii Mwana hatauona uzima bali ghadhabu ya Mungu itakuwa juu yake daima.”

Jesus Teaches Nicodemus
3 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus(A) who was a member of the Jewish ruling council.(B) 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi,(C) we know(D) that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs(E) you are doing if God were not with him.”(F)
3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[a]”(G)
4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”
5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.(H) 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit.(I) 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You[c] must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”[d](J)
9 “How can this be?”(K) Nicodemus asked.
10 “You are Israel’s teacher,”(L) said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know,(M) and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony.(N) 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven(O) except the one who came from heaven(P)—the Son of Man.[e](Q) 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness,(R) so the Son of Man must be lifted up,[f](S) 15 that everyone who believes(T) may have eternal life in him.”[g](U)
16 For God so loved(V) the world that he gave(W) his one and only Son,(X) that whoever believes(Y) in him shall not perish but have eternal life.(Z) 17 For God did not send his Son into the world(AA) to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.(AB) 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned,(AC) but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.(AD) 19 This is the verdict: Light(AE) has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.(AF) 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.(AG) 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
John Testifies Again About Jesus
22 After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized.(AH) 23 Now John(AI) also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were coming and being baptized. 24 (This was before John was put in prison.)(AJ) 25 An argument developed between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing.(AK) 26 They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi,(AL) that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan—the one you testified(AM) about—look, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.”
27 To this John replied, “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven. 28 You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.’(AN) 29 The bride belongs to the bridegroom.(AO) The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.(AP) 30 He must become greater; I must become less.”[h]
31 The one who comes from above(AQ) is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth.(AR) The one who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard,(AS) but no one accepts his testimony.(AT) 33 Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful. 34 For the one whom God has sent(AU) speaks the words of God, for God[i] gives the Spirit(AV) without limit. 35 The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.(AW) 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life,(AX) but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.

3 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?
11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.
12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.
23 And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.
24 For John was not yet cast into prison.
25 Then there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying.
26 And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.
27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.
28 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.
29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.
30 He must increase, but I must decrease.
31 He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.
32 And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony.
33 He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.
34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.
35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.
36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
