^22 (A)So you will say to Pharaoh, Thus says the Lord: Israel is my son, my firstborn. ²³ I said to you: Let my son go, that he may serve me. Since you refused to let him go, I will kill your son, your firstborn.^(B)

¹² For on this same night I will go through Egypt, striking down every firstborn in the land, human being and beast alike, and executing judgment on all the gods of Egypt—I, the Lord!^(A)

Death of the Firstborn. ^29 (A)And so at midnight the Lord struck down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh sitting on his throne to the firstborn of the prisoner in the dungeon, as well as all the firstborn of the animals.

² Consecrate to me every firstborn; whatever opens the womb among the Israelites,^(A) whether of human being or beast, belongs to me.

¹³ Every firstborn of a donkey you will ransom with a sheep. If you do not ransom it, you will break its neck. Every human firstborn of your sons you must ransom.

¹⁵ When Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the Lord killed every firstborn in the land of Egypt, the firstborn of human being and beast alike. That is why I sacrifice to the Lord every male that opens the womb, and why I ransom every firstborn of my sons.’
