For none of us lives for himself, and no one dies for himself.(A) If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.(B) Christ died and returned to life(C) for this: that he might be Lord over both the dead and the living.(D)

For none of us lives for ourselves alone,(A) and none of us dies for ourselves alone. If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.(B) For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life(C) so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.(D)

So then, just as you have received(A) Christ Jesus as Lord,(B) continue to walk in him, being rooted and built up in him(C) and established in the faith, just as you were taught,(D) and overflowing with gratitude.

Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition,(E) based on the elements of the world, rather than Christ.(F) For the entire fullness(G) of God’s nature dwells bodily[a] in Christ, 10 and you have been filled by him, who is the head(H) over every ruler and authority. 11 You were also circumcised in him with a circumcision not done with hands, by putting off the body of flesh,(I) in the circumcision of Christ,(J) 12 when you were buried with him(K) in baptism, in which you were also raised with him(L) through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.(M) 13 And when you were dead in trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, he made you alive with him and forgave us all our trespasses. 14 He erased the certificate of debt, with its obligations, that was against us and opposed to us, and has taken it away by nailing it to the cross.(N) 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and disgraced them publicly; he triumphed over them in him.[b](O)

16 Therefore, don’t let anyone judge(P) you in regard to food and drink(Q) or in the matter of a festival or a new moon(R) or a Sabbath day.[c] 17 These are a shadow(S) of what was to come;(T) the substance is[d] Christ.(U) 18 Let no one condemn[e] you(V) by delighting in ascetic practices(W) and the worship of angels, claiming access to a visionary realm. Such people are inflated(X) by empty notions of their unspiritual[f] mind. 19 They don’t hold on to the head, from whom the whole body,(Y) nourished and held together by its ligaments and tendons, grows with growth from God.

20 If you died with Christ(Z) to the elements of this world, why do you live as if you still belonged to the world? Why do you submit to regulations: 21 “Don’t handle, don’t taste, don’t touch”? 22 All these regulations refer to what is destined to perish by being used up; they are human commands and doctrines. 23 Although these have a reputation for wisdom(AA) by promoting self-made religion, false humility, and severe treatment of the body, they are not of any value in curbing self-indulgence.[g](AB)

The Life of the New Man

So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.(AC) Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.(AD) For you died,(AE) and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your[h] life, appears,(AF) then you also will appear with him in glory.(AG)

Therefore, put to death what belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity,(AH) lust,(AI) evil desire, and greed,(AJ) which is idolatry.(AK) Because of these, God’s wrath(AL) is coming upon the disobedient,[i] and you once walked in these things when you were living(AM) in them. But now, put away(AN) all the following: anger,(AO) wrath,(AP) malice,(AQ) slander,(AR) and filthy language from your mouth.(AS) Do not lie(AT) to one another, since you have put off(AU) the old self(AV) with its practices 10 and have put on(AW) the new self. You are being renewed in knowledge according to the image of your[j] Creator.(AX) 11 In Christ there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all.(AY)

Spiritual Fullness in Christ

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord,(A) continue to live your lives in him, rooted(B) and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught,(C) and overflowing with thankfulness.

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy,(D) which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces[a] of this world(E) rather than on Christ.

For in Christ all the fullness(F) of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head(G) over every power and authority.(H) 11 In him you were also circumcised(I) with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh[b](J) was put off when you were circumcised by[c] Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism,(K) in which you were also raised with him(L) through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.(M)

13 When you were dead in your sins(N) and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you[d] alive(O) with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,(P) 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness,(Q) which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.(R) 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities,(S) he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them(T) by the cross.[e]

Freedom From Human Rules

16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you(U) by what you eat or drink,(V) or with regard to a religious festival,(W) a New Moon celebration(X) or a Sabbath day.(Y) 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come;(Z) the reality, however, is found in Christ. 18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility(AA) and the worship of angels disqualify you.(AB) Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind. 19 They have lost connection with the head,(AC) from whom the whole body,(AD) supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.(AE)

20 Since you died with Christ(AF) to the elemental spiritual forces of this world,(AG) why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules:(AH) 21 “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”? 22 These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish(AI) with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings.(AJ) 23 Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility(AK) and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.

Living as Those Made Alive in Christ

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ,(AL) set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.(AM) Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.(AN) For you died,(AO) and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your[f] life,(AP) appears,(AQ) then you also will appear with him in glory.(AR)

Put to death,(AS) therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature:(AT) sexual immorality,(AU) impurity, lust, evil desires and greed,(AV) which is idolatry.(AW) Because of these, the wrath of God(AX) is coming.[g] You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.(AY) But now you must also rid yourselves(AZ) of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander,(BA) and filthy language from your lips.(BB) Do not lie to each other,(BC) since you have taken off your old self(BD) with its practices 10 and have put on the new self,(BE) which is being renewed(BF) in knowledge in the image of its Creator.(BG) 11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew,(BH) circumcised or uncircumcised,(BI) barbarian, Scythian, slave or free,(BJ) but Christ is all,(BK) and is in all.
