God Will Punish the Proud

For the director of music. A ·maskil [skillful psalm; meditation] of David. When Doeg the Edomite came to Saul and ·said [reported] to him, “David ·is in [^Lhas come to/entered] Ahimelech’s house [1 Sam. 21:7; 22:7–23].”

52 Mighty warrior, why do you ·brag [boast] about the evil you do?
    God’s ·love [loyalty] will continue ·forever [^Leveryday; all day].
²You think up ·evil plans [^Ldestruction].
    Your tongue is like a sharp razor [Prov. 18:21],
    making up ·lies [deception].
³You love ·wrong [evil] more than ·right [good]
    and ·lies [falsehood] more than speaking the truth. ·Selah [Interlude]
⁴You love words that ·bite [destroy; ^Lswallow up]
    and ·tongues that lie [deceptive tongues; James 3:1–12].

⁵But God will ·ruin you [^Lbreak you down] forever.
    He will grab you and ·throw [tear] you out of your tent;
    he will ·tear you away [uproot you] from the land of the living. ·Selah [Interlude]
⁶Those who ·do right [are righteous] will see this and ·fear God [^Lfear; Prov. 1:7].
    They will laugh at you and say,
⁷“·Look what happened to [^TBehold] the man
    who did not ·depend on God [^Lmake God his refuge]
but ·depended on [trusted/put his confidence in] ·his money [^Lthe abundance of his wealth].
    He grew strong by his ·evil [destructive] plans.”

⁸But I am like ·an olive tree
    growing [^La green olive tree] in God’s ·Temple [^Lhouse; 1:3; 92:12–13; Jer. 11:16].
I ·trust [have confidence in] God’s ·love [loyalty]
    forever and ever.
⁹God, I will ·thank [praise] you forever for what you have done.
    With ·those who worship you [his loyal ones/saints], I will ·trust [put my confidence in] you because you are good.

¹Why do you boast of evil, you mighty hero?
    Why do you boast^(B) all day long,^(C)
    you who are a disgrace in the eyes of God?
²You who practice deceit,^(D)
    your tongue plots destruction;^(E)
    it is like a sharpened razor.^(F)
³You love evil^(G) rather than good,
    falsehood^(H) rather than speaking the truth.^[c]
⁴You love every harmful word,
    you deceitful tongue!^(I)

⁵Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin:
    He will snatch you up and pluck^(J) you from your tent;
    he will uproot^(K) you from the land of the living.^(L)
⁶The righteous will see and fear;
    they will laugh^(M) at you, saying,
⁷“Here now is the man
    who did not make God his stronghold^(N)
but trusted in his great wealth^(O)
    and grew strong by destroying others!”

⁸But I am like an olive tree^(P)
    flourishing in the house of God;
I trust^(Q) in God’s unfailing love
    for ever and ever.
⁹For what you have done I will always praise you^(R)
    in the presence of your faithful people.^(S)
And I will hope in your name,^(T)
    for your name is good.^(U)
