7 I will proclaim the Lord’s decree:
He said to me, “You are my son;(A)
today I have become your father.(B)
8 Ask me,
and I will make the nations(C) your inheritance,(D)
the ends of the earth(E) your possession.
9 You will break them with a rod of iron[a];(F)
you will dash them to pieces(G) like pottery.(H)”
10 Therefore, you kings, be wise;(I)
be warned, you rulers(J) of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear(K)
and celebrate his rule(L) with trembling.(M)
12 Kiss his son,(N) or he will be angry
and your way will lead to your destruction,
for his wrath(O) can flare up in a moment.
Blessed(P) are all who take refuge(Q) in him.

3 Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;(F)
you are the one Israel praises.[c](G)
4 In you our ancestors put their trust;
they trusted and you delivered them.(H)
5 To you they cried out(I) and were saved;
in you they trusted(J) and were not put to shame.(K)
6 But I am a worm(L) and not a man,
scorned by everyone,(M) despised(N) by the people.
7 All who see me mock me;(O)
they hurl insults,(P) shaking their heads.(Q)
8 “He trusts in the Lord,” they say,
“let the Lord rescue him.(R)
Let him deliver him,(S)
since he delights(T) in him.”
9 Yet you brought me out of the womb;(U)
you made me trust(V) in you, even at my mother’s breast.
10 From birth(W) I was cast on you;
from my mother’s womb you have been my God.
12 Many bulls(AA) surround me;(AB)
strong bulls of Bashan(AC) encircle me.
13 Roaring lions(AD) that tear their prey(AE)
open their mouths wide(AF) against me.
14 I am poured out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint.(AG)
My heart has turned to wax;(AH)
it has melted(AI) within me.
15 My mouth[d] is dried up like a potsherd,(AJ)
and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;(AK)

34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall;(A) but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(B) 36 And sitting down, they kept watch(C) over him there. 37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.
38 Two rebels were crucified with him,(D) one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(E) 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(F) save yourself!(G) Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”(H) 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel!(I) Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe(J) in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him(K) now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
The Death of Jesus(L)
45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness(M) came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[a] lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[b](N)

1 Save me, O God,
for the waters(A) have come up to my neck.(B)
2 I sink in the miry depths,(C)
where there is no foothold.
I have come into the deep waters;
the floods engulf me.
3 I am worn out calling for help;(D)
my throat is parched.
My eyes fail,(E)
looking for my God.
4 Those who hate me(F) without reason(G)
outnumber the hairs of my head;
many are my enemies without cause,(H)
those who seek to destroy me.(I)
I am forced to restore
what I did not steal.
6 Lord, the Lord Almighty,
may those who hope in you
not be disgraced because of me;
God of Israel,
may those who seek you
not be put to shame because of me.
7 For I endure scorn(L) for your sake,(M)
and shame covers my face.(N)
8 I am a foreigner to my own family,
a stranger to my own mother’s children;(O)
9 for zeal for your house consumes me,(P)
and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.(Q)
10 When I weep and fast,(R)
I must endure scorn;
11 when I put on sackcloth,(S)
people make sport of me.
12 Those who sit at the gate(T) mock me,
and I am the song of the drunkards.(U)
13 But I pray to you, Lord,
in the time of your favor;(V)

answer me with your sure salvation.
14 Rescue me from the mire,
do not let me sink;
deliver me from those who hate me,

or the depths swallow me up(Z)

The Death of Jesus(A)
28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished,(B) and so that Scripture would be fulfilled,(C) Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar(D) was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.”(E) With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
31 Now it was the day of Preparation,(F) and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses(G) during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.(H) 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced(I) Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.(J) 35 The man who saw it(K) has given testimony, and his testimony is true.(L) He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled:(M) “Not one of his bones will be broken,”[a](N) 37 and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”[b](O)
The Burial of Jesus(P)
38 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders.(Q) With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. 39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus,(R) the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.[c] 40 Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen.(S) This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.(T) 41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. 42 Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation(U) and since the tomb was nearby,(V) they laid Jesus there.

3 May the mountains bring prosperity to the people,
the hills the fruit of righteousness.
4 May he defend the afflicted(C) among the people
and save the children of the needy;(D)
may he crush the oppressor.(E)
5 May he endure[a](F) as long as the sun,
as long as the moon, through all generations.(G)
6 May he be like rain(H) falling on a mown field,
like showers watering the earth.
7 In his days may the righteous flourish(I)
