    and ate ·meat that had been sacrificed to lifeless statues [^Lsacrifices to the dead; Num. 25].
²⁹ They ·made the Lord angry [^Lprovoked him] by what they did,
    so ·many people became sick with a terrible disease [plague broke out among them].
³⁰ But Phinehas ·prayed to the Lord [^Lstood and prayed],
    and the ·disease [plague] ·stopped [was restrained; Num. 25:6–9].
