8 Will not I in that day, says the Lord, destroy the wise men out of Edom and [men of] understanding out of Mount Esau [Idumea, a mountainous region]?
9 And your mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that everyone from Mount Esau will be cut off by slaughter.
10 For the violence you did against your brother Jacob, shame shall cover you, and you shall be cut off forever.
11 On the day that you stood aloof [from your brother Jacob]—on the day that strangers took captive his forces and carried off his wealth, and foreigners entered into his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem—you were even as one of them.(A)
12 But you should not have gloated over your brother’s day, the day when his misfortune came and he was made a stranger; you should not have rejoiced over the sons of Judah in the day of their ruin; you should not have spoken arrogantly in the day of their distress.
13 You should not have entered the gate of My people in the day of their calamity and ruin; yes, you should not have looked [with delight] on their misery in the day of their calamity and ruin, and not have reached after their army and their possessions in the day of their calamity and ruin.
14 And you should not have stood at the crossway to cut off those of Judah who escaped, neither should you have delivered up those [of Judah] who remained in the day of distress.
15 For the day of the Lord is near upon all the nations. As you have done, it shall be done to you; your dealings will return upon your own head.(B)
16 For as you [Edom] have drunk upon the mountain of My holiness [desecrating it in the wild revelry of the destroyers], so shall all the nations drink continually [in turn, of My wrath]; yes, they shall drink, talk foolishly, and swallow down [the full measure of punishment] and they shall be [destroyed] as though they had not been.(C)
17 But on Mount Zion [in Jerusalem] there shall be deliverance [for those who escape], and it shall be holy; and the house of Jacob shall possess its [own former] possessions.(D)
18 The house of Jacob shall be a fire and the house of Joseph a flame, but the house of Esau shall be stubble; they shall kindle and burn them and consume them, and there shall be no survivor of the house of Esau, for the Lord has spoken it.(E)
19 They of the South (the Negeb) shall possess Mount Esau, and they of the lowland the land of the Philistines; they shall possess the land of Ephraim and the fields of Samaria, and Benjamin shall possess Gilead [across the Jordan River].(F)
20 And the exiles of this host of the children of Israel who are among the Canaanites shall possess [Phoenicia] as far as Zarephath, and the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad shall possess the cities of the South (the Negeb).
21 And deliverers shall go up on Mount Zion to rule and judge Mount Esau, and the kingdom and the kingship shall be the Lord’s.(G)

8 “In that day,” declares the Lord,
“will I not destroy(A) the wise men of Edom,
those of understanding in the mountains of Esau?
9 Your warriors, Teman,(B) will be terrified,
and everyone in Esau’s mountains
will be cut down in the slaughter.
10 Because of the violence(C) against your brother Jacob,(D)
you will be covered with shame;
you will be destroyed forever.(E)
11 On the day you stood aloof
while strangers carried off his wealth
and foreigners entered his gates
and cast lots(F) for Jerusalem,
you were like one of them.(G)
12 You should not gloat(H) over your brother
in the day of his misfortune,(I)
nor rejoice(J) over the people of Judah
in the day of their destruction,(K)
nor boast(L) so much
in the day of their trouble.(M)
13 You should not march through the gates of my people
in the day of their disaster,
nor gloat over them in their calamity(N)
in the day of their disaster,
nor seize their wealth
in the day of their disaster.
14 You should not wait at the crossroads
to cut down their fugitives,(O)
nor hand over their survivors
in the day of their trouble.
15 “The day of the Lord is near(P)
for all nations.
As you have done, it will be done to you;
your deeds(Q) will return upon your own head.
16 Just as you drank(R) on my holy hill,(S)
so all the nations will drink(T) continually;
they will drink and drink
and be as if they had never been.(U)
17 But on Mount Zion will be deliverance;(V)
it will be holy,(W)
and Jacob will possess his inheritance.(X)
18 Jacob will be a fire
and Joseph a flame;
Esau will be stubble,
and they will set him on fire(Y) and destroy(Z) him.
There will be no survivors(AA)
from Esau.”
The Lord has spoken.
19 People from the Negev will occupy
the mountains of Esau,
and people from the foothills will possess
the land of the Philistines.(AB)
They will occupy the fields of Ephraim and Samaria,(AC)
and Benjamin(AD) will possess Gilead.
20 This company of Israelite exiles who are in Canaan
will possess the land as far as Zarephath;(AE)
the exiles from Jerusalem who are in Sepharad
will possess the towns of the Negev.(AF)
21 Deliverers(AG) will go up on[a] Mount Zion
to govern the mountains of Esau.
And the kingdom will be the Lord’s.(AH)

15 For the day of the Lord is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.
16 For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually, yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.
17 But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.
18 And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau; for the Lord hath spoken it.
19 And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau; and they of the plain the Philistines: and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria: and Benjamin shall possess Gilead.
20 And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall possess that of the Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.
21 And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the Lord's.
