¹⁰ Moses heard the people, family after family, crying at the entrance of their tents. The Lord was very angry;^(A) Moses was also provoked.^[a]

³³ While the meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, the Lord’s anger burned^(A) against the people, and the Lord struck them with a very severe plague.^(B)

¹⁰ So the Lord’s anger burned that day, and He swore an oath: ¹¹ ‘Because they did not follow Me completely,^(A) none of the men 20 years old or more who came up from Egypt will see the land I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob— ¹² none except Caleb^(B) son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua^(C) son of Nun, because they did follow the Lord completely.’ ¹³ The Lord’s anger burned against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness 40 years until the whole generation that had done what was evil in the Lord’s sight was gone.

¹⁵ for the Lord your God, who is among you, is a jealous God.^(A) Otherwise, the Lord your God will become angry with you and wipe you off the face of the earth.

Defeat at Ai

7 The Israelites, however, were unfaithful^(A) regarding the things set apart for destruction. Achan son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of what was set apart, and the Lord’s anger burned against the Israelites.

¹⁶ If you break the covenant of the Lord your God, which He commanded you, and go and worship other gods, and bow down to them, the Lord’s anger will burn against you, and you will quickly disappear from this good land He has given you.”

³ So the Lord’s anger burned against Israel,^(A) and He surrendered them to the power of Hazael^(B) king of Aram and his son Ben-hadad^(C) during their reigns.
