Moses’ Decision

Then Moses gave a ruling[a] to the Israelites by the word[b] of the Lord: “What the tribe of the Josephites is saying is right. This is what[c] the Lord has commanded for Zelophehad’s daughters: ‘Let them marry[d] whomever they think best,[e] only they must marry within the family of their father’s tribe. In this way the inheritance of the Israelites will not be transferred[f] from tribe to tribe. But every one of the Israelites must retain the ancestral heritage.

This is what the Lord commands for Zelophehad’s daughters: They may marry anyone they please as long as they marry within their father’s tribal clan. No inheritance(A) in Israel is to pass from one tribe to another, for every Israelite shall keep the tribal inheritance of their ancestors.
